Show 1 24 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS News WEDNESDAY MAY 16, 2001 School Board prepares for new fiscal year By Rachel Tueller The Kane County School Board attempts to meet regularly on the second Wednesday of every month. Junes meeting for 200 1 is tentatively scheduled for the last Wednesday of June in order to give the board time to wrap up financial matters for the schools fiscal year. The schools fiscal calendar year runs from July 1 through June 30. Superintendent Robert Johnson noted that many financial commitments the board must evaluate, such as construction, teacher salaries and other educational concerns would again be reviewed for the upcoming year. In other business, the board approved the addition of two days to the school calendar, for the purposes ofUPASS training and preparation for educators only. One of the days will be Thursday, August 16. The board felt this was the most reasonable day, as educators would in declining enrollment, its already be regrouping for a staff tough to compete with surround- meeting of sorts, (also referred ing districts in teacher salaries to as Institute Day) on August Compared to other districts, Kane Countys teacher salary ranks between 25th to 28th out of 40 in Utah. The Legislatures decision to allocate funds to various districts is based primarily on district enrollment numbers. According to Johnson, with Kane Countys continued trend as revenue declines along with enrollment numbers. However, Kane County does rank as number six in the state in starting wages for teachers in their first three years. All in all, the school board will have much to consider with a fresh start on a new fiscal year. 17. A number of reps addressed the board regarding the Big Water City Park proposal. The town of Big Water obtained ten acres near the school in 1988 . from the BLM. The city had since lost the lease and is now asking for assistance from the school board to obtain the land in order to further develop and improve the area for a city park. The board now must review all aspects of their contract with the BLM for the 70 acres it owns in the area, to decide if they will either deed the land to Big Water or provide the land on a long term lease agreement. The board is also currently modate both. The board approved Jeremy Chamberlain to teach Special Education at Kanab High School, as well as filling the coaching position at Valley for basketball. The board also discussed issues surrounding the removal of the old school in Orderville, located behind the existing high school.
