The beautiful red Poppy was chosen the official symbol of the American Legion and the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary in 1920. Crepe paper was selected for the construction ofthe official poppy, and the production of the pop- pies has been made available to the veterans as a way for them to earn some income. It seems that toward the end of World War I, a fierce battle took place on a field in France called Flanders Field. Many young men died in that battle and it was late in the day so the decision was made to wait and come back the next morning to bury the dead. As the soldiers arrived the next morning, a beautiful sight greeted them. Flanders Field was literally covered with thousands ofbright red poppies which had sprung up overnight. It was as if the precious blood of those young men seeped into the ground and came up in the form of red poppies, as a tribute and a' memorial to their death. The soldiers ofall nations have come to look upon the Poppy as the living symbol of the sacrifices that had been made by their fellow soldiers who have died in war. Memories of the war dead al- ways bring thoughts of those who did not die, but who came back to years of hardship and suffering; a fate that seemed at times to be worse than death, The Poppy provided a way to honor the dead soldiers by giv- ing service to the living victims of the war. Wearing the little red poppy signifies honoring the dead and helping the living. a fla; at 9:30 a.m., refresh- emony area- - ments will be served and stu-ca- n dents will be organized to audiotape, videotape, photograph, or just listen to your memories.
