Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS News 10 WEDNESDAY MAY 16, 2001 City Council welcomes Mountain Man Rendezvous By Rachel Tueller Kanab residents have often been heard to gripe about the lack of diversion in their own hometown. Fred Crawdad Torres says he had the citys interest in mind when he began to plan for a good ole Mountain Man gathering right here in Kanab. Torres approached the city council during the May 8, 2001 meeting for assistance and approval for the event. Torres proposed the Mountain Man Rendezvous to be held July 13 & 14 just north of the Kanab City Park, near the head of the Squaw Trail behind the levee or dike. Torres plan suits the area well, tying in nicely with other events hosted in the area, like the Southern Utah Blue Grass Festival, Western Legends Roundup, the Duck Creek Chili Cook-Of- f and the Harley and Motorcycle Festivals welcomed locally. All the events give the area a uniquely rich character, in turn giving visitors a heaping serving of the flavor residents know and love in this Big Red Country. All these events are celebrations of the same theme-- a life full of hardy and robust outdoors living. Participants and -organizers alike all enjoy learning through these events, the many traditions that have for generations become the backbone of this community and country. And Kanabs been proud that these traditions are still alive and well throughout this region. The desire to share these unique traditions is only natural. Torres and his committee were given the approval to hold the event, pending approval from neighboring residents. The Mountain Man committee agreed and had conceived of these concerns, offering to speak to the neighboring homeowners door to door to address any issues or concerns. The Rendezvous will feature many entertaining events and displays. Among them are the pancake toss, kids games, knife and hawk throw, primitive archery, and of course, a bit of shooten that even locals are welcomed as Walk Ons. Torres claims the most popular event is one especially for the ladies, The Fry Pan Toss. These things are the real McCoy. Boys and the men folk have only to guess what this couples participation event might entail! Torres and the Mountain Man committee have vowed that the grounds for the event will be highly respected by all participants, as the mountain men follow closely the leave it as you found it code of ethics. Other matters the city council addressed included the Safety Week Poster contest winners. The winners received a combination of pizza gift certificates and a cash prize. The council planned on awarding the students entire classes with treats for these students contributions. Cecilia Garcia won for the most artistic poster. Kaylie Horton won first place, Josey Orton second and Raeanne Long won third. All were highly praised by the entire council for their artis- tic insight and contributions for Safety Week. Later, some discussion by council addressed concerns surrounding the Youth Court Program. The program serves as a diversion program. The judge refers young offenders to the youth court where a jury of their peers judges them. For the offender, participation in youth court could mean more leniency from the judge in their case. A few rules do Memorial Day Program presented by American Legion Post 69 apply; it can not be a serious offense and the offender must first plead guilty then agree to participate in the youth court for arraignment. The ruling on the case in youth court is not permanent its dropped from the offenders record. This process is to allow teens to better understand the court system. Some guess that the program also serves as a future deterrent for those whod be repeat offenders, as teens tend to take very seriously being judged by a jury of their peers. Council committed to meeting at a later date to finding solutions in beefing up the program to make it work and keep it running. Council approved a soft match of up to $10K, contingent upon approval from UDOT, for the ciub and gutter needs at the Levi Stewart Memorial. Member Carol Sullivan noted there was a need for the project anyway, it was just a matter of timing. 4 C . V JpW personnel policy & job description for Officer Mark Fisher.
