Utilizing the 1906 Antiquities Act which authorizes presidents to designate certain federal lands for protection without Congressional approval, Clinton signed into law the largest designation of land mass in the lower 48 states this century. The monument encompasses 1.8 million acres of land east of Kanab and southwest of Capitol Reef National Park. Certain areas within the monument are restricted to specific uses. You can access the monument through two main avenues of vehicular travel. In the northern portion of the county, vistors can see the monument out their window from beautiful Highway el 12. Highway 89 between Kanab and Page offers vistas of the Vermilion Cliffs layer of the Grand Staircase geologic feature. Other partially-surface- d Z roads include the Bun-Trai- l (to Capitol Reef National -- . m'- Park) and Johnson Canyon (to the Skutumpah turn C--i - "m off). Gravel roads include Glendale Bench, and a portion of Hole in the Rock roads. Driving conditions on sandy and clay roads, such as Cottonwood (connecting Kodachrome State Park with Highway 89), Smoky Moun- tain, Skutumpah and Croton, depend on weather and current maintenance Located in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Grosvenor Arch is approximately nine miles southeast of Kodachrome Basin State Park. status. This site lies between the towns of Boulder and Escalante on Highway 12. Its a place of remarkable beauty. If youre up to it, theres a 5 12 mile (round trip) developed interpretive trail to reach the shady pool at the base of the 126 foot falls. The hike is moderately difficult and should be good training for other Escalante Canyons hikes. Grosvenor Arch. This impressive natural arch is located approximately nine miles southeast of Kodachrome Basin State Park, off Highway 12. If youre interested in backpacking or hiking, be aware that most of the monument is still remote with undeveloped hiking routes. Travelers wanting to enjoy the monument, should stop by BLM offices for visitor information and updates on current weather conditions.
