Designated by the State Legislature in 1998, The Utah Heritage Highway begins on the southern section of U.S. 89 from Thistle Junction in Spanish Fork Canyon, and takes you south through the state to Kanab, the southernmost border community in Utah and Fredonia, Arizona. The Heritage Highway encompasses 250 miles and 48 communities, with each community offering its own unique heritage. The Heritage Highway gives travelers not only a ride through some of the most spectacular scenery in the west, but also offers them a taste of real Utah through participation in heritage experiences and the leisurely sampling of the arts, crafts and wares of Utah heritage artisans. Lost gold mines, Mormon United Order history, Butch Cassidys log cabin, authentic Scandinavian festivals, a quilt walk and a Mountain Man Rendezvous, are just a few of the places and events one might see while traveling the Heritage Highway. The Heritage Highway travel guide contains maps and listings of over 200 heritage destinations. Shops, artisans and historic locations are designated on the map for easy reference for tourists. Bed and breakfast inns, guest ranches, restaurants offering heritage cuisine, and other heritage experiences are also listed. The guide will be available in visitor information centers across the state as well as in each business included in the guide. Kane County begins in the Headwaters section of the guide, with further listings in the Under the Rim section. Headwaters features Duck Creek, Alton, Glendale and Orderville. Kane County Tidbits The United Order was practiced in Kane County in 1874, lasting almost 20 years in Orderville. Brigham Young felt that this would be a solution for the economic distress of the people and would make the ' saints more equal, and would gain individual values from the way of living.
