Show 25 The Kanab Area Vacation Guide Souvenir Edition Experience History Tour the Heritage House : By Barbara Pyles There is a century of history behind the Heritage House, and the walls whisper of the love, triumphs, and heartaches of those who lived there. This magnificent Victorian house, located at First South and Main, was built by John Rider in 1894 and served as the home for two early pioneers in Kanab, Henry Eyring Bowman and Thomas Chamberlain. Bowman settled in Kanab in 1885 to teach school. When he was called on a mission by the LDS Church in 1896, he sold the house to Chamberlain. The Thomas Chamberlain family was unusual. Chamberlain had six wives and 55 children. Chamberlain moved his first wife Elinor Hoyt, and their seven children into the house. (Many polygamist husbands maintained separate homes for each wife). The house, when Chamberlain bought it, was one of the finest in Kanab. It was designed so that when a breeze went down the street, it would go all the way through the house. The ground floor included a large d front room, a parlor, a fair-size- bedroom, a dining room and kitchen. There were three small bedrooms and one large family room upstairs. The house shows meticulous detail in the woodwork surrounding the windows and doors. The woodwork in the parlor and living room is 18th century English style, and the hinges and doorknobs are the originals. All four fireplaces in the house are designed differently. The fireplace in the living room is the only addition that Chamberlain made to the house. There are still pieces of furniture in the home that belonged to the families. Other furniture and interesting pieces, donated by citizens from the area, add character and ambience to the house. The Heritage House is within walking distance of downtown Kanab. one block south Center Street on Main and 100 South. ill! up your cooler at the largest & superouarhet Sor sunles around of The building is well preserved. Everything the pioneers built was made to last, and whatever they built was a work of art. There are at least three different colors of green on the gingerbread trim that goes all the way around the roof. Look for emblems in the gingerbread. One of the most noticeable emblems is a small pyramid within a large pyramid. It stands for health and happiness for the family. Another emblem is an all seeing eye. Its said to be the Eye of God symbol to show that God is watching over the family. A quarter spinning wheel decorates the top of the house, and small sun scallops are on each of the three bay windows. The front porch is quite elaborate. The boards on the foundation are circled and diamond shaped. Notice the bee hives on a post on the porch, its a Utah symbol. This home is on the Xational Register. It was purchased by Kanab City in 1974 and restored to preserve Kanabs heritage. It is open for tours during the summer months.
