Recently, 110 wild turkeys took up residence in various areas of the two counties. The Valley High School Future Farmers of America were largely responsible for the Long Valley project. In each of the areas, interested landowners supported the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources program to establish wild turkey populations in desirable habitat. The two counties have nad wild turkeys since reintroduction of the birds in the 1950s from Colorado and Arizona. Those birds were all of the Merriams variety a turkey more adapted to mountain forests of ponderosa . The captured birds are transported in a specially designed box supplied by the National Wild Turkey Federation. Many wild turkeys enthusiasts are appreciative to the following landowners and citizens for their interest and support in bringing wild turkeys to our area: The Valley High School Future Farmers of American members John Reese, Raymond tablished near Escalante, and in the Johnson and Paria drainages of Kane County. The recent effort is to expand the birds use to other areas. The UDWR is getting many requests throughout Utah from landowners for the birds to be established on their properties. Turkeys are well known for their extensive diet of insects. The recent additions were trapped from established populations near Beaver, Holden, Fillmore, and New Harmony.
