Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31, 1996 Community By Dixie Brunner 7 Helping Hands says thanks and please dont stop now Through the holiday season many went the extra mile showing love and kindness to all. November the month of There was an old woman who lived in a shoe... We have to ask ourselves, what kind of shoe was she boarding the brats in? Are we talking a cheap shoe made of synthetic material, or were the kids housed in rich, Corinthian leather? Theres a big difference, you know. If the little woman had all those bodies crammed into a shoe made of materials that dont breathe, the neighbors were probably complaining. The old lady and kids were probably candidates for a carpet of odor eaters. Shoes arent the same as they used to be. In a funny Saturday Night Live segment, the character, Grumpy Old Man, says, in his day, they didnt have all these fancy shoes. He says there was only one size of shoe for everyone and it was size 7, and you just crammed your foot in whether it fit or not... and you loved it. There are too many shoe opg tions today. has become a experience for many. Theres footwear available in every size, shape, and color. I dont like shoe shopping. Once I find a pair of shoes I like, Im loyal to them, way beyond the length oftime they should be worn. Itd be more humane if someone would sneak the old through 2,000 pairs piled in a heap, trying to find the style and size you want. But on the other hand, you have complete privacy. Theres not going to be any teenage sales clerk asking you if your shoes double as gunboats. Its not easy to know how the shoes youve selected look when youre shopping discount. They usually have inch floor several of little mirrors around, but they arent much help. You can only see feet in them. Granted its shoes youre buying, but theres a1 whole big body attached to them you cant see. So in order to find out how the shoes look, you shuffle around the discount store wearing a pair of shoes bound together with a string. The only person you find to d give an opinion is an playing Nintendo alone in the electronics section. At least he thinks they look okay. Wherever you go to buy shoes, the first order of business is, what are you looking for. Are you in the market for dress, casual or recreation shoes? Lets say youre a woman looking for dress shoes for an upcoming special event. There are flats, closed toed, open toed or pumps inch wheels. There in two-fou- r are red ones, green ones, black ones, brown ones. You can select shoes constructed of man-mad- e materials, ones with leather uppers or ones entirely of leather. Your choices are limitless. May I help you, maam? the footwear salesman asks, casting a downward glance at the scuffed-u- p shoes youre wearing. Shoes are personal. Have you ever found a pair you just love to wear? I have, many times. But the bottom line is, when your toes are exposed, especially in the middle of winter, its time to pop for some new ones. The first shoe shopping decision is whether to go to a shoe store or discount store. Each choice has its good and bad points. If you opt for a shoe store, you may pay a bit more for foot coverings. But on the other hand, with a skilled salesman you shoe. might get a better-fittin- g A few rules of shoe store eti- thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for. Food and miscellaneous items were brought to the Helping Hands Center to brighten the Thanksgiving holiday for others. December A busy month for many as they spread Christmas cheer. The Linton Chiropractic Clinic posted signs around town to let people know of the one day canned food drive on December 17. KONY Radio and the Southern Utah News offered free advertising for this special day. The patients of Dr. Linton paid for their visits with canned food. 750 pounds of canned goods were donated for our Helping Hands families. Kanab Middle School, along with several individuals, set up boxes around town to gather food for the Center. The Thrift Store helped out by donating toys for the children. Churches, organizations, businesses and our other schools were also out sharing with others. Helping Hands would like to say thank you to all who helped throughout the holiday season. Many spirits were lifted and hearts mended because of the love and kindness of our community. Now the joyous season is past and a new year has begun. The spirit of giving and sharing doesnt have to leave; for Christ and sons, Ramie and Taylor at the Helping Hands Center, 750 the unloading pounds of canned goods brought in from the one-da- y canned food drive. Dr. Loral Linton mas is Christ all year round. So keep it and spread it, this light that weve found. We can keep this light shining by each one of us pulling together, working together, sharing together and helping each other. Help is needed with our electricity and propane bill for the center. Right now we have no heat and pipes could freeze and break. And, of course, we always need more food. Lets make this the best center around. Wont you please help? Only you can make it happen. You look cautiously around the store, lean into him and whisper the sum you have in mind. He laughs deliriously. He gets up still laughing, goes into the back room and returns moments later with a small box. Evidently the only shoes you can afford are footies. You search for days for the right shoe with the right fit at the right price. Finally defeated, an hour before the important event youve been planning for, you just run into a store, grab and buy the first pair you see. Its a size 7 and you just jam your foot into it, whether it fits or not. You hope these shoes will last awhile; you arent up for another odyssey quette should be observed. Check the kids socks before going shopping. Its embarrassing to discover your kid has yesterdays holey socks on. Also, for you adults out there, a word of caution: take care of that foot odor problem before you go in.
