Show Ekd : ASSOCIATION PRESS UTAH 307 UFA 123199 W 200 S - SUITE 5005 Food drive nets 750 pounds for Helping Hands More Kane County Royalty Page 7 Page 20 VOLUME 64 NUMBER 52 500 WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31, 1996 COLOR COUNTRY'S HOME TOWN NEWSPAPER Operation Septic Tank nets 26 arrests On January 29, the Kane County Narcotic Strike Force initiated Operation Septic Tank, in which 26 individuals were arrested, 8 of whom are juveniles, for felony narcotic charges of distribution of marijuana and meth-amphetami- ne within Kane County. 42 arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the operation. K The warrant service and roundup began Monday morning at 6 a.m., and consisted of a coordinated effort ofofficers from seven agencies assisting the Kane County Narcotic Strike Force Agent. Those assisting agencies were the Kane County Sheriffs Office, Kanab City Police Department, Orderville City Police Department, National Park Service, Utah Highway Patrol, Fredonia Marshals Office, DWR and the BLM law enforcement. Vanessa Casebolt crowned Miss Kane County 1996 After a full day of competition including interview and talent, Vanessa Casebolt was crowned Miss Kane County 1996 during the eveningprogram of the Miss Kane County Scholarship Pageant. Ms. Casebolt, daughter of Larry and Donna Casebolt, is a senior at Kanab High School. Joining Ms. Casebolt in the 1996 royalty are Christy Church, 1st Attendant, and Tricia Taylor, 2nd Attendant. Ms. Church is the daughter of Keith and Claudia Church and also attends Kanab High School. Ms. Taylor is the daughter of Ron and Julie Taylor of Orderville and is a Freshman attending Southern Utah University. In addition to the Miss Kane County royalty, the pageant also crowned new age divisions this year. A total of 31 young ladies vied for the various divisions. Jr. Miss Kane County royalty included Sara Vreeken, Jr. Miss Kane County; Aurelia Johnson, 1st Attendant; and Torrie Casebolt, 2nd Attendant. Miss Debutante Kane County was bestowed on Stephanie Roundy. Her 1st Attendant was Tiara Puro and 2nd Attendant went to Meggan Pepper. In the Missy Miss division, Tambra Puro received the title with Joni Martin as 1st Attendant. 2nd Attendant honors were received by Angela Roper. Mini Miss recipients included Courtney Stanton as the new Mini Miss 1996, Toni Lynn Crofts as 1st Attendant and Tayva Puro as 2nd Attendant. The evening event was emceed month undercover operation, which led to the issuance of the narcotic arrest warrants, in which Agent Jackson, utilizing confidential informants (Cls), infiltrated a number of separate narcotic rings that were bringing and distributing marijuana Warrants for their arrests were issued Agent Jackson allegedly made marijuana purchases, through CIs, from a pregnant, 20 year old, Nicole Evans, of Kanab. It is alleged that Evans then introduced the agent to her mother and stepfather, Terrill, 37, and Max Rice, 33, whom marijuana was also purchased from, who then introduced him to their source, Monte Byrd, 36, and Seth Hawkins, 34, from Pima, Arizona who also allegedly sold marijuana to the agents informants. Of the 12 juveniles arrested, the youngest was an 8th grade female, from the Kanab Middle School, who has been charged with one-3r- d degree and three-2n- d degree felony distribution of marijuana charges, in which it is alleged that the female juvenile was selling marijuana for, and with, two male adults, Vaj Reynolds, 33, of Kanab, Utah, and James Choate, 36, of Fredonia, Arizona. Reynolds has debeen charged with three-2n- d gree felony distribution of marijuana charges and Choate with one-2n- d degree felony distribution of methamphetamine and one-3r- d degree distribution of marijuana charge. Other juveniles arrested included four males from munities of Kanab and Orderville, Utah, five males and one female from the Kanab area, Orderville, Utah. Former Miss Kane County Crystal Honey helped emcee the afternoon preliminaries and was on hand in the evening to assist in the crowning of the new royalties.
