I By Margaret Blair Young and Darius Aidan Gray Book Review by Karla Johnson This was one of the best, yet most difficult books, Ive ever read. It was an excellent work of fiction, yet as it is based on fact, the treatment of the blacks by so many members of the church is very clear and touching. Whileitis hard to understand why people treat others this way, I found myself wandering in thought and reflecting on the times thatchurch members treat other members or non members with supposed spiritual superiority and or rudeness. Although the original colored saints traveling with President Brigham Young were faithful and active all their lives, it is no wonder that the next generation of the family, and into the 3rd and 4th generations were driven out of the church. At the time of the priesthood opening to the blacks' few family members of the origi- nal black saints were members. The authors are very effective with the language, allowing the reader to feel the depth of education of each of the characters. The authors portrayed the courage, the discouragement and feelings of the characters very well Gray is a descendant of one of the characters and that blood perspective lends itself to a truly unique work of literature. I did not read the first two books, and I can hardly wait to get them. I would give this as an 8.5 on a |
