Kane County Sheriff Lamont Smith and Commissioner Mark Habbeshaw, acting on behalf of the entire Commission, and frustrated over the BLMs refusal to remove disputed road signage V vrw within the Grand Staircase-Escalant- National Monument, e armed themselves with state code and legal opinion, and moved the signs themselves. re- Commissioner Habbeshaw along with a letter defending their actions. Sheriff Smith said their actions are mandated under state code concerning obstruction or regulation devices on county roads. We gave them notice and did not in any way hurt their signs, said Smith. We pulled the signs out of the ground, inventoried them and took them to the county yard. We called and set up a time and place to meet for them to take possession of the signs. The action raised eyebrows around the state, and was met with criticism from Governor Leavitts office.
