V K2J tsm h $0 especially when taking a novice camping After the truck was packed with tent, food, fishing gear, etc., the Redhead and I embarked on our annual late summer odyssey to her favorite spot on the Green River. Naturally, after stopping to fill up with gas, my bride of 20 odd years had to purchase additional goodies from the convenience store ( Do you ever wonder why our gals always pack the munchies in the cooler and locate it in unreachable zones of the truck so you cant enjoy them while traveling Or why makeup, lipstick and hairspray seem more important than a fishing pole? ) With full gas tanks and a large bag of pastries and soda, we were steering our way finally out of town and upward along a tortuous road The trees gradually changed from pinion-jumpe- r to aspen. No change in color of summer green to fall reds and yellows, which is how I measure my seasons, however, the morning air had an enervating quality for foretelling that autumn was nearing The Redhead had started on her second package of Twinkles and her diet cola looked to be half full As long as she kept eating, she wouldnt ask questions requiring long explanations. One concern though was for the safety of my s chocolate which were sitting dangerously close to her side of the seat. I was driving at a fast clip along the road with its dips and bumps. Subconsciously I suppose I was in a hurry to get to our camping s spot before she got to my Anyway, an unexpected dip in the road bounced the truck as she was preparing a final attack on the last third of her Twinkie. Her mouth was missed and a small gob of Twinkie cream was deposited on the tip of her nose. I immediately thought of the old witch in Hansel and Gretel she had a nose like that. The bride was unaware of the s cream gob and concern for my was abated as terminal mirth set in. Why she decided at this time to put on lipstick Ill never know but another bump in the road caused the colored stuff to slide a streak off the corner of her mouth giving the appearance of a demented grin. She began wiping off the errant stain and asked me if she got it. I lied and said, yes What with the cream on her nose and the lipstick the day was getting better. Her hand s moved toward the taking away the delight of tne moment. About then was when she spotted some small blue flowers alongside the road What are those she asked in childlike wonder Dandelions. Dandelions are yellow! Yuh, but at this altitude they turn blue from lack of oxygen. Oh, who is that? Where? That guy waving at us to pull over. "Dont strange Perhaps, conservation officers have a difficult time they deal wtih so many different situations Sometimes they are not prepared when they meet just plain folks The two hour drive to our spot had passed faster than usual and the top of the old cottonwood by the river came into view Now the problem was getting the stuff off the spouses face without her knowing it As I stopped the truck I started to tell her Honey, theres a small smudge on your Too late The eye liner pencil was m hand and her face was in front of the side mirror FRAAAAAANK"' Its kind of crowded in my Beagles small house I guess when winter comes he will appreciate the extra warmth racer, Sharalyn Smith time, Saturday Vernal LEHI BARREL works on getting a good in Ding-Dong- Ding-Dong- "5 w ,2. - w , s v 4 is' .mV: Ding-Dong- . 4 CARBON ROPER, Glen Larsen, right, ropes a calf during the Uintah Basin High School Rodeo.
