Uintahs last win came when they beat Orem in their homecoming game in 1982. The Utes lost 16 games in a row before they beat the Cougars. The Cougars won the coin toss and elected to receive the kickoff, but a quarterback sack by Kawika Teo pushed Union back to its own 17 yard line. Union punted the ball from close to the end zone, and Uintah took over the ball on Unions 45. Uintah fumbled the ball, but the Utes held on to the bouncing ball. The Utes quarterback Kenny Mohar put the Uintah team in scoring territory when he kept the ball and motored to the 17 yard line. A bootleg run by Mohar placed the Utes on the seven yard line. Uintah advanced to the six yard line, and Mohar fired a pass to Kyle White down the right side of the field and in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game with 8:11 left in the first quarter. Dee Steinfeldts extra point kick gave Uintah a 7 to 0 lead. Unions Rodney Mezenen turned in a kickoff return to the Union 35, and the Cougars advanced the ball to the 44 yard line for a first down. The Utes Clark Barker decked a Union runner and a completed pass to Buff Harmston was good, but short of the first down mark. The ball was punted away by the Cats. The Uintah Utes had a short football visit as the ball was intercepted by Unions Lance Nielson at the Uin- Uintah stone walled the Cougars who were bounced back to the 35 yard line. Union attempted a fourth down try tah 27. for a first down, but struck out they were stopped at the 27 yard line. Union's defense shined in the next series as they stopped the Utes cold. A Uintah punt put the Cougars at their own 46 yard line when the first quarter buzzer sounded. The score in favor of Uintah. was Cougar quarterback Eddy Samuels advanced the ball one yard to the 47, but a three yard run by Mezenen and an eight yard pass catch by Ryan Eldredge placed the Union team at the Uintah 42. 7-- 0 A 33 yard pass bomb by Mike Olsen placed Union knocking on Uintahs goalline door at the nine, but a blocking below the waist penalty wiped out the Cougars touchdown hopes. Union was placed back on the Uintah 32, but once again the yellow flags rained on Unions parade as a clipping penalty pushed Union back to the line. 45 yard The third setback wasnt a penalty, but was a sack by Greg Jaramillo, which placed the ball on the 50 yard line. Union continued to have problems as they fumbled the ball back to their own 48. Union punted the ball away, but another penalty forced the team, which had been on Uintahs nine, to punt the ball from the Union 32. A pass to Todd Mulville enabled the Utes to move to their own 42, but a Uintah fumble was pounced on by Union at the Uintah 42. Running plays up the middle by Mezenen once again had Union seeking their first score from Uintah territory at the 28. A pass catch by Eldredge placed Union at the 21, but the Ute defense put out a no vacancy sign in the end zone as they slammed the door shut on the Cougar scoring hopes. Uintah took over the ball at the 22 yard line. Uintah had fumbles on two plays. First, the ball was fumbled on the snap from center, but the Utes recovered the slippery pigskin. Some of the football players rushed out and forced the fans off the field. Finally order was restored and the Friday night fights returned to the Friday night football game. Uintah came out fired up in the second half as Teo returned the opening kickoff 51 yards to the Cougar 39. The Utes were unable to get a first down, and the Cougars gained the ball at their own 43. odd 14-- 0 . Larry Wiseman intercepted at the Union 22, but the Utes failed to score. However, the Utes werent too upset with the two touchdown failures as they were on the winning side of a 20-- score, after sixteen times in a row on the losing 0 side. A number of runs advanced Union to the 17, but Uintahs defense crushed Union and White netted a fumble at the 21 yard line to force another Cougar touchdown hope to disappear.
