Sept. 3 is the anniversary of Lester Farnsworth Wires birth. Now, Lester Farnsworth Wire isnt exactly a household name. In fact, he probably isnt even an answer in Trivial Pursuit. But his name does have a place in highway and Utah history. Wire has the honor and distinction of inventing the first electric traffic light, which was installed right here in Utah in 1912. Courtesy Sky West Airlines Utah farm prices down According to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, prices received in Utah by farmers and ranchers for beef cattle in August were down $1.00 per hundredweight (cwt.) $48.70. Sheep and lamb prices were mixed, with sheep up $3.30 per cwt., at $20.00 and lambs off $.80 per cwt., at $66.70. The average wool price was unchanged at $.65 per pound. Barley and hay prices in August were off with respect to last month. They held their ground despite the beginning drivers who hadnt quite mastered maneuvering their vehicles and the horse-draw- n carriages whose drivers didnt want to give way to the newfangled contraptions taking over the streets. Wire, who was named as head of the Salt Lake City Police Departments traffic detail, wanted to untangle the confusion that was spreading through the city streets. He wrote the first book of traffic rules and regulations, but they were largely ignored by vehicle operators. Undaunted, he thought about what else he might do to bring some order to traffic. The story goes that one day when Wire was reading the Bible, he came across a passage that said men do not light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick and givetli light to all that are in the house, ihat was it, he thought. A light on a pole. Wire told his Chief about his idea, but the Chief said it wouldnt work. I think it will, Wire replied. After some planning, he came up with what would be the first traffic light in the United States. Wire constructed a large wooden holes on each box with two side. Inside the holes he put Mazda lamps which had been dipped in red or green watercolors, since at that time there were no colored globes being manufactured. The box was topped with a hinged gabled roof. It was hinged to give access to the inside in case repair was needed, and slanted so rain and snow would slide off. He painted the box with a bright yellow paint and pole. planted it on top of a ten-fosix-inc- h The light was installed in the inof Main Street and Second South in Salt Lake City. It was operated by a patrolman who used a two-wa- y throw switch to change the colors. To power the contraplights tion, wires from the box were attached to the overhead trolley wires. tersection Reaction to the light was mixed. People would stand on the street corners to watch it change. Some people laughed and called it a big bird house. But gradually it came to be respected. People from big cities back East marveled that a hick town like Salt Lake would have something as sophisticated as that to control traffic. Improvements were made to the design, and the original traffic light was eventually replaced. Use of traffic lights spread across the city and the country. Wires light was retired to Tracy Aviary, where it became of all things a bird house. Lester Farnsworth Wire may not be a household name. But he did make an important contribution to the safety of the motoring public. Your local Independently owned frua Value fiSHTOnS Central Utah Water Conservancy Districts General Manager, Don A. Christiansen, Tuesday afternoon in Orem, announced that his District and its Board of Directors had not in any way been consulted about the construction of a bowling alley in Duchesne City. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation the alley will help offset impacts that the employees of the Bureau have made on the area. Mr. Christiansen said according to the information that had been given to him, the Bureau of Reclamation has over 238 employees residing in Duchesne City which has social impact on the community. Christiansen said the District did not have an understanding that the construction costs of the bowling alley would in any way relate to the repayment obligations of the District. It is our understanding that the funding for this type of construction and development comes from Section 8 monies which are considered recreational mitigation and will not be reimbursable as part of the project costs. According to the Bureau of Reclamation Repayment contract, recreation, fish, wildlife and flood control costs are Operation, maintenance, and replacement costs allocated to these purposes will be covered by appropriations requested from Congress or will be paid by local operating agencies, Bureau officials said. HANGERS WILL RUST Because dampness might cause rust stains and snags, avoid hanging wet garments to dry on a metal hanger. If you have no other choice, one alternative might be to cover the hanger with a towel before using it. Hardware Store haa national chain-buyin- g power.
