When the baby is born and not perfect, theyve lost their perfect child. Its kind of like the sins of the parent are visited on the children. Thats one thing that causes guilt. A common misconception about hearing loss, is once the child is fitted with a hearing aid, hearing is totally restored. Ms. Clark said a hearing aid isnt like wearing glasses. Hearing is improved with the device but still distorted. Trained home visitors, such as Ms. Clark, spend one hour each week with the child and parents modeling communication techniques that will enhance the childs understanding of his surroundings. These visits usually continue for 14 to 18 months. As a mother realizing your child has a problem, its hard, Mrs. Prettyman said. Sheri has taught me about hearing aids and the whole structure of the ear and the source of Burkes problem. Burke is fitted with two hearing aids and has the conception that everything in life runs on LEE GRANT language parents. Miles Homes FILMS of progressing. My job is to help parents be in good enough emotion and skills to teach language, Ms. Clark said. Actually, I graduate the parent, not the student. Ms. Clark said dealing with the hearing loss is a very emotional experience for some lifof jfc rich with language. With the aid of two hearing aids, Burke can now hear sounds and understand PhotobVAi Hartmann language. 7 Vi I) Showing thru Thurs., 7:00 &9: T The close relationship between Pat Prettyman and son Burke, has helped him work her from a level of "mime" communication to a life rjT-- J HCTUAf 0Q discovery of language and sound can hit a barrier the sound barrier. When first approached on the subject of hard of hearing, the thought of aged parents or grandparents is imaged. However, an increasing number of children are discovered to suffer from a hearing loss at very early ages. This discovery can mean the difference between a child branded as slow and a child correctly fitted with hearing aids and special language instruction to continue a normal learning process. According to Dr. Thomas Mahoney, director of the Bureau of Communicative Disorders in Salt Lake City, nationally about one in every 1,000 live births are expected to have a severe to profound hearing loss. That means about 40 babies a year are born in Utah with a severe to profound hearing loss, he said. Many more are born with a moderate to mild hearing loss. Sheri Clark, a local licensed audiologist, believes a hearing loss can be treated as any other handicap and a level of normalacy can be obtained. Ms. Clark is involved in the State School for the Deafs Parent Infant Program. This program provides individualized help for parents to deal with their childs handicap. I teach parents how to simulate language, she said. I show them what they have in their home and how to use the child to m demonstrate what I mean. A hearing problem in a child can be detected as early as one day old, according to Ms. Clark. There are certain things to make you suspect a hearing problem, she said. If a newborn doesnt startle in response to a sharp clap within three to six feet or if at three months old the child doesnt search for the source of a sound, a hearing loss is probable.
