Show 3B New Bond No Outlandish Parody by Mark Cartwright Green Sheet Entertainment Critic SEEN ON THE SCREEN DEPT: Ian Fleming created him. He gave him a license to kill, a love of good food, beautiful women, fast cars and dangerous adversaries. Sean Connery brought him to the big screen in 1962 and, while George Lazenby and Roger Moore essayed the role, Connery has always been considered the best. No, Im not talking about Pee Wee Herman, but the worlds best known British secret agent, James Bond 007. Bond is back in a big, big way in The Living Daylights starring Timothy Dalton as the best James Bond since Connery. Dalton, a trained Shakespearian actor brings Bond back to what Ian Fleming envisioned, giving the character the credibility that has been missing for a long time. His portrayal of the agent who could enjoy a good meal and romantic encounter, just after dispatching an enemy of the Crown, is right on the money. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bonds screen appearance with The Living Daylights being the 15th in the successful series of adventures. This time out, in a taut script by Michael Wilson and Richard Maibaum, Bond has to deal with a gun runner, the KGB, a freedom fighter who happens to be well educated, and, in a departure from the usual format, one romantic interest perfectly played by Maryam dAbo. Albert (Cubby) Broccoli has finally allowed Bond to become a more mature person rather than an outlandish parody of himself running around in space chasing some guy with steel teeth ( Moonraker ) and the villians are much more realistic, going back to the believeability of Auric Goldfinger or Red Grant ( From Russia With Love).
