Show 3 THE GREEN SHEET Maloney, Planners Clash Over CUP Plan residents in the area have made it plain they do not want a park constructed in their back yars. We dont want to spend more money on another plan just to have it shot down, he said. Maloneys comments prompted commission member Chandler St. John to shoot back that $7,000 is penny ante for the size of the project, thats being built out there and that the district should want to be as responsive as possible to residents concerns about dust and construction problems. A number of residents appeared to complain about continuing problems of dust kicking up from fill dirt during wind storms as well as a number of other concerns, including the lack of trust being experienced by neighbors because of promises the district has allegedly not kept. Following the discussion, the commission voted to postpone for two weeks a decision on the extend of the landscaping and the question of the brick wall. by Ray Friess Green Sheet Staff Writer SALT LAKE. I dont want any more hassles, I just want to get the job done. That comment from Gerald Maloney of the Central Utah Water Conservancy district revealed the frustration felt by Maloney and probably residents in the neighborhood of 5800 So. 3800 West where the district is constructing a large terminal system that will bring water from the Central Utah Project to the Salt Lake Valley. Appearing before the County Planning Commission, Maloney again asked the commission to postpone for two more weeks any decision on how the area around the reservoirs will be landscaped, saying the latest recommendation from the commission staff was something new that he and the board had not hear of, and would want to consider before the commission makes a decision. At issue now, the latest in a long line of items that have brought the commission and the former West Valley City mayor into clashes, is whether or not a block wall should be constructed around the north end of the project, and if so, how extensive the landscaping should be. Maloney complained to the commission that the district has spent $4,000 on a landscpaing plans and another $3,800 on a park plan, which will not be used because the As In other action Tuesday, the commission denied a conditional use permit for Stephen Andelin, 3623 W. 5780 South, to convert his garage into a candy kitchen, saying conversion of the garage was not a practice the commission felt good about. The UACC exists to advise and serve any community council, regardless of its geographical location. How, may we ask, could a public hearing hurt the welfare of a community. . Of course it couldnt, that is unless the MCC has something to hide. At very least, a public hearing could only help to improve the community by bringing to public light, all the issues and facts. Is the MCC afraid of what the public may find. . Are they fearful that the truth may expose them for the area. They made only statements of truth about the MCC and its lack of integrity in not listening to the people. The MCC has an odd way of asking for loyalty, when they expel from the council, the representatives of the same people from whom they seek the loyalty. How could anyone expect the citizens to be loyal to an organization that isnt even loyal to them. It strongly appears that the members of the MCC are much more concerned with their own little empire of power than with the people of Magna. By their actions the citizens are sincerely trying to make Magna a better place to live. They are trying to ensure that Magna will be a place where everyones voice is honestly heard and carefully considered, where, like in the rest of America, the people can elect and hold accountable, their own representatives, and where they can be sure that special interest groups do not try to run their community. The MCC sums up its letter by asking, Where is it written that a newly formed council, ... is any more effective than the volunteers who have been . . . fighting for Magnas rights for the past 60 years.. We ask, where is it written that a newly formed council cannot be just as effective. . In fact, a new council that has been chosen by the people, rather than by special interest groups, could not help to be more effective in really knowing and meeting the needs of the people, because it would be accountable to the people. And where does it say that the MCC has all the answers. Besides, that newly formed council that sought and gained our independence from England in 1776, didnt do too bad a job! It is difficult to imagine why anyone in the United States of America would fight against a movement to allow the public to elect its own council representatives. Why would anyone hang on so tenaciously to a form of government that is so foreign to our constitution.. It makes a person wonder what these same people would have done when the thirteen original colonies chose to declare their independence from tyranny.
