The project is fully operational and successfully accomplishing its designed purpose. In the first year of operation, pumping will reduce the level of the lake by more than 12 inches. ! Mr. and Mrs. Albert Peterson of Murray are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Janalee, to David W. Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Benson of Cedar City. The responsible decision last year to implement the West Desert flood control project was based on an economic urgency to prevent the imminent loss of Interstate 80, railroads, wastewater treatment plants, and possibly the Salt Lake International Airport if the lake level continued to rise a few more feet. The lake level reached the e record high of 4211.85 feet above sea level the past two years. Current prediction indicate the lake level will remain high appreciate receiving a copy of your May article in the Green fcheet. You confuse, however, the Great Salt Lake Pumping Project with a dissimilar need to further water through 1988. They are planning a September wedding which will be held in Cedar City. - , 12th number of flood control options were thoroughly studied and evaluated including diversion of water from the Bear River into the Snake River Basin in Idaho, dredging, diking, pumping water from Utah Lake into Cedar Valley, reservoirs to store water from the Bear River, and pumping water into the west desert The West Desert Pumping Project evolved as the quickest action that could be taken to provide the greatest flood control benefit at the most reasonable cost. A Your solution to keep water in reservoirs in the mountains and eastern basins until we need it is ideal. A number of reservoirs built with federal, private and state funds already exist in drainages that feed into the Great Salt Lake. Those reservoirs provide storage to help manage runoff from mountain snowpacks and help serve summer agricultural, industrial and municipal water needs in northern Utah. Because approximately 60 percent of the runoff into the Great Salt Lake comes from the Bear River, construction of storage reservoirs to contain water from this river was a viable flood control alternative. Nine possible reservoir sites were identified in the Bear River Basin from Smiths Fork in Wyoming to the mouth of the Bear River. Unfortunately, all nine reservoirs would have to be built to come close to equaling the flood control benefit of pumping The combined cost would be over $300 million. From 1963 to the present time, however, the Great Salt Lake has risen nearly 20 feet, more than doubled its bounds, and increased its volume three fold. The lake now covers more than 2,400 square miles and contains over 30 million acre feet of water. Over 12 feet of that rise, caused by record-settin- g precipitation in drainage areas that feed the Great Salt Lake, has occurred since the fall of 1982. During the past five years the volume of the lake has increased by over 15 million acre feet. This increase in volume is unprecedented in recorded history and virtually impossible to plan for. Even during this relatively dry year runoff into the Great Salt Lake has been approximately 140 percent of normal. Jlf We elayer i?eift bsttettriekans. Based on technical, institutional and environmental considerations, only four reservoirs could realistically be built to store 340,000 acre feet of water. Design and construction would require a number of years. For these reasons, building reservoirs in the Bear River Basin would not effectively control the water level of the Great Salt Lake. Studies are being made to possibly develop one or more reservoirs to contain water from the Bear River for municipal and industrial uses. Investigation of the Bear River storage project is being completed as part of the state water plan. Enlargement of existing dams or construction of new reservoirs in drainage basins to the Great Salt Lake for municipal, agricultural or industrial uses, and whatever flood control benefit could be provided, could possibly occur. Proposals, however, will face environmental, financial, engineering and geologic challenges. Completion of the Little Dell dam east of Salt Lake City and the Jordanelle reservoir on the Provo River will provide valuable water supply and flood control benefits to residents in Salt Lake, Utah and Wasatch counties. 30, 1987 Janalee Peterson To Marry Letters Dear Ms. Bradford: Thursday, July With Physician Finder, its now easy to get information on hundreds of doctors from Alta View, Cottonwood, and LDS hospitals with one quick phone call.
