Show THE GREEN SHEET 4B Thursday, August 7, 1986 Milestones I Suppose Flies Have A Purpose Too! It says, in the Good Book, that when the Lord God w as creating the world. He looked upon His work and found it good." Xot too many of us h ould argue with that, either. I like to watch and get acquainted with the pheasants, quail, ducks, squirrels and cats. The trouble is that if you live outside, sooner or later you re also forced to get acquainted with flies. But just the same, every so often I run into a leu things I surely would like to change. In fact, there are a couple of things I outright wish had neter been thought of. One of them is flies. By late June Im eating most of my meals on the patio. The summer passes with day after day spent outside and then comes August. It really could be the best month of all for outdoor living, but instead, somewhere along about this time, I get company. The flies come to see me and whats more they come to stay. 3TinrTrfiEm Apph Upaide-Dai- wi Coak Btead Tbsps. unsalted butter Tbsps. maple syrup, plus more for serving 2 apples (about 12 ounces), peeled, cored and sliced, 14 inch thick. 2 2 Batter: cup cornmeal cup flour 1 . tsp. baking powder tsp. salt 4 tsp. baking soda 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup buttermilk V4 cup maple syrup 3 Tbsps. unsalted melted 4 They sit on my arms, my legs, my face and hair. I brush them off, but whats that to a fly??? He's used to being brushed off. He probably thinks its a game, cause he comes right back for more. So I decide to be stoical and ignore them. After its my patio. I bought and paid for it, and, whats more, I intend to use it. No little quarter-inc- butter, all, Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Heat the butter and maple syrup in a heavy skillet over medium-higheat. Add the apple slices and saute, h all. fly is going to spoil it for me, either. Not at 10-in- h So I ignore them. Or try to. But its darn hard to ignore a fly that's sitting right on the very same morsel of food I had next planned to put into my mouth. And, when I consider some of the know I'm places Ive seen flies sitting, well beaten and its back into the house for all eating until another year. tossing occasionally, until softened slightly, about 5 minutes. Use two spoons to arrange the apple slices in a neat pattern in the skillet, fanning them out from the center. For the batter, combine the ...I A tiny, miserable, dirty, useless fly has chased me right off my own patio. Right out of my own New Danny Childers To Live In West Valley backyard. I seriously doubt if He really took a good look at flies before stamping the whole thing with His "okay ". Course , it's easy to see how, in all the confusion of making elephants, cows, kangaroos, ostriches, et al, that a li'l old fly could slip by without even being noticed. With so much else going on. He probably didn't even know Hed made the pesky things. Each spring I count the days until it's warm enough to begin living outside and I can't wait to get out the patio furniture. I not only eat outside, but relax, nap, read and do much of my desk u ork out there, too. You can try all the sprays, stickum stuff, candles to burn and colored lights you want, but they dont really work. They only make the flies curious and then they fly to tell their friends to come and see what those crazy people have thought of now. Its probably blasphemous, but I still think there was some sort of a slip-u-p way back there in Genesis. Flies are one thing on this earth there is no earthly use for.
