Show IB THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, August 7, 1986 Lifestyle When There Are Two Instead Of One - It s Twice The Challenge And Double The Fun by Olga Milius Oreen Sheet Staff Writer KEARNS. Double your pleasure, get double everything rolled into one, may well be the theme song of homes where twins are a part of the family. -It really is double the fun. I wouldnt trade my twins to have them one at a time for anything, said Rebecca Whitson, president of . the Salt Lake Mothers of Twins Club (SLMOTC). And, alhtough parents joke about double trouble, and the need for ?an extra pair of hands, most of them seem to agree. Jennifer and Julia Whitson, now 5 years old, were briefly in the same class. Learning to treat i 4 twins as individuals can be a pro-blem, their mother said. They were constantly being com- 5 pared with each other instead of with the other kids. double your fun, pre-scho- ol X The youngsters, like many twins, had their own special language in which they could communicate with each other, so they had a hard time learning to talk to other people, she explained. When they were placed in different classes, they came up with every excuse in the book to get back together, but they soon adjusted and began to communicate with other people. Mrs. Whitson buys the twins clothes in the same style but in different coirs and lets them choose what they want to wear. They seldom make the same choice. One is a tomboy type and wants to wear levis; the other likes to dress like a little princess, she laughed. The club provides mothers of twins an opportunity to share the problems - and the fun of having two children at the same stage of development, she said. The club has a newsletter that goes out to about 450 families. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Murray library. The main thing with twins this age is you have to watch them like a hawk, said Terry Bird, father of Ashley and Levi. He and his wife Laura dress their look-alikdifferently and plan to have them placed in different classes when they go to school. The Birds sometimes use to help keep hold of their active youngsters, attaching them to the stroller when wheeling their baby sister, Jessica Joy, and walking with their big brother, Joshua. kid-cuf- During the recent twins day at Hogle Zoo, the twins were constantly trying to get closer to the animals, at one point being found down on hands and knees eating popcorn with the goats. And how do twins feel about being a twin? People ask us that all the time," said Jodie Ball and her twin sister JoAnn Taylor. We just say we dont know, weve always been one. Jodie and Ann are the daughters of William and Dorothy Humphrey of Kearns. thought not. Then the nurse saw the second baby and the doctor came running back. So dad had to go buy another outfit to bring us home. Mom felt so bad she had only brought one to the hospital, said Jodie. The twins are identical and people often had difficulty telling them Our folks werent expecting twins, they said, When the first baby was born, the mother said she felt another one, but the doctor apart. Its easier now we wear our hair differently, said Ann. Continued on page 3 - -- PRE $ WINTER garage door ' ' i 591 K year ly (7 brought one outfit to the hospital. Nearly 50 percent of all women suffer symptoms of pre- menstrual syndrome (PMS) while about 15 percent can become incapacitated by it. PMS symptoms usually are experienced one to two weeks prior to menstrual flow (bleeding). The symptoms can include depression, anxiety, memory loss, loss of selfesteem, lack of control, breast tenderness, weight gain, bloating and headaches, according to Dr. Eric P. Trunnell, researcher for the University of Utah School of Medicines Dept, of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. William R. Keye and I are trying to establish a model for the study of PMS,. Dr. Trunnell says. It is believed that a link exists between the levels of certain hormones and PMS, but it has never been conclusively shown, he says. We need 20 female volunteers age 21 - 39 who have regular menstrual cycles, but who suffer with severe premenstrual syndrome. They must not be taking oral contraceptives, have no history of psychiatric or physical disease, to be taking medications and not be pregnant, he says. Participants in the study will receive a free diagnostic assessment of PMS which includes questionnaires, psychological assessments, an interview, and a physical exam. Study subjects will also have the option of being treated by Dr. Keye following participation in the study. Participants in the study will have to visit the University Hospital to have blood drawn about 20 times k over a period. They also six-wee- will receive six psychological assessments over the same period.
