Show 3 Granger Fights For Tourney Spot GRANGER. There was one last gasp of life left in the Granger American Legion team going into action last night (Wednesday). Granger faced a playoff test with Roosevelt and the winner of that game captured the final spot in the state tournament which gets under way Saturday. Granger battled to the finals of the Valley League Tourney before falling to Holladay in the fight for the last automatic berth. The winner of that game will play Kearns at 5 p.m. at Ken Price. Grangers action during the week included a 17-- season-endin- g test at Alta where Coach Bob Fratto used Automotive pitching to preserve strength for the tournament. 3 The strategy almost work- ed. Granger opened play with an easy 11-- 3 jvin over Skyline on Saturday, then beat West Jordan before falling to Holladay There were some shockers in the Valley League affair with Cyprus, Cottonwood and Hillcrest all failing to make it past the first round of the 6 single-eliminatio- affair. n Holladay four and Granger outhit Webb came on after Holladay Hollathe second inning and one-hi- t day the rest of the way. Granger Holladay 7, Granger 4 Holladay scored all seven of its runs in the second inning to grab the final spot as the seventh place Valley League entry. Three straight Granger errors opened the floodgate and then two-ru- n doubles by Ryan Losser and Steve Davies anchored Holladays claim to the important win. Tim Horyna and Bret Burton had key singles and Gary Ogden rounded out the scoring with a homer. Granger drew first blood with a pair of runs in the second when Tyler Wilder, just up from Automotive, strked a double. He later scored on a groundout. Jake Shewmake also had a base hit in the second. Grangers other two runs came in the fourth when Duane Webb doubled and scored on another Wilder Chuck Embley singled home Wilder. Both teams made their share of miscues in the field, Granger five, r. run in the bottom half of the inning, while Holladay finished with a run in the fifth. Tim Hale pitched all seven innings Holladay, giving up four hits. Holladay had seven hits. With wins over East on Monday, and Granger Holladay won the Valley Legion tournament and earned a spot in Saturdays opening round of the state tournament. Holladay will meet up with Orem at 11a.m. at Ken Price. Holladay opened the playoff tourney Saturday by elminating Cot-- . tonwood from further contention Holladay had lost its last two regular to Hilllcrest season games, Wednesday and 12-- to Granite Friday. Cottonwood, meanwhile had won two of three games before entering the tournament, by forfiet over over SouthWest Thursday and Murray Friday. Last Wedneday, Cottonwood fell to Skyline HOLLADAY. . Skyline Granger 7, West Jordan 6 Granger came up with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to capture the key playoff contest. Singles by Greenwood, Webb and Dalton, an error and a sacrifice fly by Fratto spurred the rally. West Jordan got off to a fast start with four runs in the top of the first as Fowlkes homered and Danny Price stroked a two-ru- n single. Granger got three runs in the first all on a round triper by Peterson. Granger tied in the third on a sacrifice fly by Dalton, but West Jordan moved back in front in the top of the fourth on a two-ru- n double by Travis Jessop. Grangers seven runs came off five hits. West Jordan had nine hits, but committed three errors. Peterson was the winning pitcher, striking out six. 3 Granger broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth inning as Chuck Crowton, Kelly Peterson and Tracy Greenwood all took a turn on the mound. Crowton was wild, walking 11 in three innings, but Granger survived it with the trio of hurlers surrendering only three hits. doubles by Rich Fratto and Peterson along with base hits by Embley and Shewmake produced three Granger runs in the Back-to-bac- 7-- 4 Cottonwood 9, Murray 6 6 fifth Murray outscored Cottonwood 1 to tie. Skyline answered with two in the home half of the inning, but the rest of the way it was all Granger. Embley homered in the second, a solo whot. In the fifth Crowton had a double and Peterson and Greenwood had base hits and there was a walk. Granger added two more in the sith as Gratto doubled and Shewmake g had a single. The final two runs came home in the seventh when Ron Pacheco doubled and Embley had a hit. Fratto had a 4x5 day and Embley had three hits. 17, Granger Kearns 7, West Jordan 3 Troy Gallo blasted a grand slam in the top of the third inning to give Kearns all the runs it would need. Todd Funderburk added an RBI double in the the same inning. Scott Little singled in West Jordans first run in the bottom of the first then Fowlkes homered, Jessop doubled and Little singled to score I'M 7, two more in the third. Kearns picked up a single run in each of the fourth and seventh innings. Staley struck out eight and walked one in route to earning the pitching win. West Jordan had nine hits and Kearns six. Alta 6, Kearns 0 Dave McQuivey threw a three walk, 11 strikeout contest on the mound and drove in two runs at the plate to lead Alta to the important win. Alta also had six hits, but Kearns committed eight errors, all costly. Two of those errors helped Alta to two runs in the top of the second. Two more runs were registered in the third, one on doubles by Hymas and McQuivey and the second on an error. Singles by McQuivey and Hymas drove in the final two Alta runs in the seventh. six-hi- t, Crown Colony WBBA 3 The game was really over in the opening inning. Granger got a run on singles by Dalton and Peterson in the top half, but Alta exploded for eight in the bottom half. Troy Ennis and Troy Chicos each had two-rudoubles and Troy Hymas an RBI triple, while Craig Schmitke drove in Johnson, coming on in relief in the three runs on a double and a single. sixth, got the win. Kearns, however, was in good shape going into the state tournament, able to scout its probably opposition. The team will meet either Roosevelt or Granger in a 5 p.m. contest Saturday at Ken Price Field. The Crown Colony team WBBA major league won the district championship tournament played at Hill View Field all-st- last week. The team is managed by Jerry Stott and coached by Jeff Johnson and includes players Jason Neal, Matt Kimball, Shyler Andreason, Adam Oettli, Michael Tidd, Cash Peterson, Steve Ritchie, Shannon Andreason, Ryan Stott, Greg Hiner, Joe Haymond, Chris Higham, Jared Jensen, Brandon Archibald and Jared Jennings. Crown Colony opened the tourney with a 1 victory over Midvale then to Sandy. The team bounced lost and defeated back to clip Midvale in the championship Sandy game. key to the championship. Pitching for Crown Colony were Stott, Shannon Andreason and Neal. Home runs were hit by Peterson and Ritchie and Shyler Andreason lead the team in RBIs. Granite, which finished at 0 in league play, gets an automatic bid to state because it has been designated as the host team for that event.
