Sweet Charity, currently enjoying a revival on Broadway with Debbie Allen in the title role, will also open tomorrow (Friday) at the Lagoon Opera House for a summer run. Sweet Charity first arrived on Broadway in 1966. It was a song and dance version of the Fillini film Nights of Cabiria. Playright Neil Simon transferred the work to the stage and reset the story in New York. In Simons version, Charity is a unlucky dance hall hostess. This Tony-awar- d winner has been called an American Classic by the New Yorker magazine. Variety claims that Sweet Charity is a fast, it loud, entertaining musical should please the public hungering for a song and dance show. The music by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields includes the hit songs Hey, Big Spender, Baby, Dream Your Dream and If My Friends Could See Me Now. The production of Sweet Charity at the Lagoon Opera House marks the Utah premiere of this musical comedy. Mary Fanning plays the title role with Wendy Summerhays and Loretta Long portraying her friends Nickie and Helene. South African actress Carol-An- n Kelleher portrays the girlfriend Ursula of the movie star Vittorio, portrayed by Rafael Castenera. The shy accountant Oscar, who lets the heroine down in the end is played by Gregg Rosentreter. Other cast members include Chris Wraspir, Cara Clawson, Rebecca Holt, Kelly Kuhnen, Lisa Cutler Taylor, Christy Summerhays, Zeric Smith, Kevin Jackman, Rodney Montague, Brian Wightman, Scott Fowler and Nannette Borman. David Dean is directing his fifth season at the Opera House, having brought Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Dames at Sea, Once Upon a Mattress and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum to the Lagoon stage. Musical director is Michael Huff, with George Maxwell (set design) and Peter Willardson (lighting design) coming to the Opera House fresh from their success with A Chorus Line with the Pioneer Theatre Company at the University of Utah.
