Garbage sacks, ice cream cones and piggy banks are among items children in Academy Park elementary are making in a ceramics class being taught by volunteer Barbara Bird. The project is one of several designed as an incentive program to encourage the children to work hard in spelling and reading, explained teacher Shirley Sholz. Mrs. Bird works closely with me to create exciting, imaginative rewards to reinforce the children. Twice a week she spends her time and energy to help upgrade the quality of academic performance of the children. Through some inservice training and through her own continuing observation, she has learned techniques best suited to the students, she said. The union between a teacher and students is a beautiful experience, the teacher remarked. The learning experience is a good one for all associated with it. The children enjoy having an additional person helping to facilitate their growth and the teacher appreciates the extra care and concern demonstrated in contributions made by a volunteer. I really enjoy working with the children and with the teacher. It is a great experience and well worth the time, Mrs. Bird said. And, this is one time the tables were turned and the teacher worked as a student in ceramics, she added. Mrs. Bird and her daughter, Patti, brought the ceramic items to the school already cleaned and ready for the children to add their original designs and paint. The items include brown garbage bags which can be used to hold pencils, crayons or any other small items; ice cream cones, flat bottomed, with the topping a lid so that they can be used to Reward For Academic Success Is r, parent-voluntee- CERAMICS . . . The children add their own designs and colors and, on the bottom of each object, the leaders engrave the childs name along with the date, as a permanent reminder of when the project took place. The students earn points for their progress in academic areas to qualify for inclusion in the activities which vary during the school year, she noted.
