Show WEST 2 valley VIEW Thursday, May 10, 1984 Alta , Brighton Fall In Region - Two Homers Power Warriors Past Davis Nine Monday MURRAY. Home runs by Jonny Walker and Mike Littlewood powered Taylorsville to a 1 victory over Davis in the opening round of the state 4A baseball tournament here Monday. The teams took a day off Tuesday and were scheduled to resume play yesterday (Wednesday), with the Warriors meeting Granger after press time. The winner plays the d winner of the contest tonight at 7, the loser will play at 2 p.m. against Highland or Clearfield. Action continues through Saturday at Derks field, with the title contest in the double elimination affair scheduled at noon or 2:30, depending on the lineup of teams. The Warriors went into the tournament with the stamp of solid favorite based on their flossy 16-- 1 record and Region Two championship which was sealed down Thursday with a win over Brighton, sparking followed with a victory over Alta, stymied by the one-hpitching of Wayne Arroyo. Because Jimmy Orwin was forced into relief work Monday, Coach Ron Rushton was expected to use Arroyo Lancers. against the offense-minde- d In Mondays tourney win, Orwin was especially impressive in relief of starter Jonny Walker. 6-- Bingham-Cottonwoo- who was not sharp, but was tough with men on base, picked up the win, being relieved in the fifth with no one out and runners on first and third. The lone Davis run scored on a tough-chanc- e groundout and from then on Orwin was in control with a blazing fastball. The crafty Walker got out of several tense situations, including one in the first when he yielded three hits. Catcher Phil Evans was his greatest ally. Evans tossed out the W'alker, Darts leadoff batter trying to steal and then in the third, picked the same runner off second with a cannon-lik- e throw from a crouch position. In the meantime, the Warriors were building a cushion. Kelly Davis doubled and scored when Walker in the first incracked a ning for a 0 lead. Littlewood stroked a two-ru- n homer in the second, then in the third, Billy Lambourne walked, stole second and scored on a two-bagg- throwing error. That set the stage for Walkers blast with Evans aboard in the fifth to give Orwin some breathing room. but Davis outhit the Warriors the combination of solid defense keyed by Evans play behind the plate and clutch pitching kept the 9-- Darts further from inflicting damage. In the win over Brighton, George homer in Grizzle belted a three-ru- n the second inning after h walk to Craig Vargo and an error. Walker came on in relief of Orwin in the fifth after Brighton had scored a run on a pair of infield base hits and a walk. Walker took care of the last out of that frame and set the Bengals down in order in the final two innings to kill that teams title hopes and avenge the only loss the Warriors suffered in preleague and league out-hi- t, play. Again the Warriors were was the run key but the home blow. sr Turning to Alta, Arroyo kept the young Hawks off balance, striking out an even dozen and allowing but one hit. His teammates gave him all the runs hed need in the first inning with four on three walks and base blows by Vargo and Vinnie Brown. In the third, Davis singled and scored ahead of an Evans homer. Vargo chased home the final run in the fifth. Rushton insists his team Isnt feel-,- , ing undue pressure from its favorite, role. While the Warriors have not been to the state tourney before, they fared well in Legion play a year ago and many of the players came, from the Kearns Babe Ruth program where they encountered championship play. And its no secret that Rushton himself is a fix-- , ture in tournament play, having won three titles at Cottonwood. I 3-- 1 Bulldogs Blanked By Dons 7-- 1 hard-hittin- i r g it MURRAY. Woodard, who has been on occasion extremely wild this season, but has also been the most consistent Lancer hurler, had masterful control of his curve ball and threw just enough heat to keep the Braves off balance. But in the meantime, Bountiful junior Rob Thompson was making the Lancers look bad at the plate. Very bad at times. Granger got all its runs in the very first inning with two out. Woodard simply bore down and struck out the next batter. In the fifth, after an error, Granger turned a picture-perfec- t double play. Woodard, who finished - with 13 strikeouts, struck out the side in the e sixth after a one-ou- t, error. Granger wrapped up the Region Three championship Thursday with a win over Skyline in a contest that saw both teams make five errors. The Lancers scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open a tight game, although Skyline rallied for three in the top of the seventh. Lund had a homer in that contest and Wilding a double. Lund also picked up the mound win with relief two-bas- 9-- 5 held from Woodard in the fifth and Todd Steele in the seventh. t I I I I I I I I I I I I I.'
