Two controversial plays in the first inning went a long way toward eliminating Cyprus from the state high school baseball playoffs. The Pirates had a runner called g out1 in a situation that might have yielded a pair of runs, then, in the bottom half of the frame, a Bingham runner was ruled safe on a close play that opened the door to a five-ru- n rally. The Pirates fell 1 to d Miner nine, a the solid favorite for possible state honors. Cyprus avoided a circus situation Thursday when it outlasted Granite in eight innings to avoid tying Skyline for third place in Region Three and forcing a playoff with the Eagles before meeting Bingham. The win meant a 5 region record and the first trip to playoff action in five years for Coach LaRon Unck and his charges. In Fridays loss to Bingham, sophomore hurler Craig Sudbury came on in relief of teammate Wayne Jones to strike out the side with men on second and third, but first-innin- 7-- highly-regarde- 14-1- 2 Bingham was throwing its ace, Jay Applegate, and the Bucs could not get back in the game. Applegate limited the Bucs to six hits and struck out 10. Sudbury, who was the winning pitcher in the contest with Granite, was almost as impressive, allowing just two Bingham runs, one of those unearned. Marquez had two of the Pirate hits. In the victory at Granite, the Pirates scored four runs in the top of the eighth to finally take command. The key blow was a bases-loade- d single by Woodruff.
