Theyre so bubbly, they keep you young, keep you on your toes, she observed. A native of Oakland, Calif., Miss deRusha started work at age 13 and held a variety of jobs. She obtained a barber license from Salt Lake Vocational School and worked as a barber to put herself through college, graduating from the University of Utah at age 35. In 1972 she was honored as one of the outstanding teachers of the nation. She has written and published several books for children, including a Japanese legend, The Bird and the Toad, and an Indian legend, The Ravens gift, and has entered a novel in this years Utah Fine Arts writing competition. Ive been working for almost 50 years and Im going to go back to California and enjoy things I havent had enough time for, such as writing, painting, wood carving, sailing and especially fishing, she said. But, I shall miss the children. I think they learn more in first grade than any other time. They learn to read, to write, to work with numbers. They soak up knowledge like little sponges and it is very rewarding to work with that age group, the teacher remarked. 80 Magna Calls Are TH Answered TUNE-U- P By MAGNA.
