Preceded in death by a son, Ren. n . . Inkley Dear Editor, As a citizen and as a professional earth scientist, I am concerned about the millions of dollars being wasted on the Thistle mud slide. I agree that the lake created behind this slide should be drained. In fact, this should have been the first and only priority. The moving of dirt to build a dam against a dynamic slide is totally irresponsible and a complete waste of hard to come by tax dollars. It is like trying to apply an even coat of paint on a balloon that is being blown up. Even less responsible is trying to build this barrier on the downhill side of the slide. First, that is the direction the slide will try to move and second, every farm boy knows if you have or expect a leak in an earthen dam or ditch bank, you plug it on the side the water enters the leak not on the side where the water leaves. If the response to this natural catastrophe had been correct, the drain tunnel would already have been completed rather than just being started, and the cost would be a lot less to property owners in the Thistle area and the taxpayers of the 5, 1983 Hudson BURIED.
