Show 2 Had Busy Day On Wednesday 1983 Thursday, May 5, WEST VALLEY VIEW Cougars Stun Hillcresf To Stay Alive KEARNS. A stunning 4 upset of Hillcrest Tuesday left Kearns high baseballers in the playoff picture. The Cougars faced a pair of games yesterday (Wednesday) that would make or break their season, despite losing to Taylorsville 6 on Friday and Bingham 5 last Wednesday. The Cougar win over Hillcrest, coupled with West Jordans upset of Brighton, left Brighton, Alta and 5-- 8-- GiCU GLANCING BACK In sports - Alta-Brighto- n Kearns . Track and field athletes from Murray high picked up 13 first places in a dual meet with Kearns to give the Spartans an 4 victory. Dan Patton won the shot put for Murray with s of an a toss of 44 feet 3, inch. (That was May, 1974). 87-5- three-fourth- 5, Hillcrest The Warriors took an early lead when Mike Littlewood took advantage of Nelsons windup to steal home with the bases full in the first frame. Kearns tied it up in the second on a walk and base hits by Snodgrass and Skinner. In the Warrior fourth, a bad hop single and failure to cleanly field a bunt opened the floodgates. Darren Evans, Troy Kay, Kelly Davis, Craig Vargo and Phil Evans were credited with base hits and Littlewood had a triple. In the Cougar fourth, Wade Jensen cracked a two-ru- n single after base hits by Nelson and Snodgrass. Kearns got three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Kyle Pehrson, a pair of walks, an error and a Snodgrass double, but Taylorsville turned a double play and the Cougars had runners thrown out at home and third to snuff the rally. In both the sixth and seventh frames, the Cougars had runners at third, but Darren Evans, the fourth Warrior hurler, was able to put out the fire. The win was credited to lefty Chris Davis who was relieved in the fourth by Jimmy Orwin, who gave way to Littlewood. Skinner (See Page 3, Col. 3) killed the Huskies. The ducks were on the pond with one out for Cougar Chris Nelson. Nelson grounded to the shortstop who sent the ball home for the second out of the inning, but the catcher, aware that Nelson is not fleet of foot, rifled the ball to first. The throw was high and sailed down the line, permitting Greg Laufer and Cory Snodgrass to race home with the tying and winning runs. It was a fitting victory for the Cougars and Cody Skinner, who pitched solid baseball against the fearsome Huskies. Snodgrass walked only three, scattered eight hits and there were no Cougar errors. The Cougars, as is their habit, spotted the visitors three runs in the first frame on four straight hits. Hillcrest scored another run in the fifth. Kearns got back two of the runs in the second on singles by Snodgrass and Wade Jensen, sandwiched around a walk. In the fifth, Gordon Jackson belted a home run to make it Kearns tied for the third and the final playoff spot pending the outcome of a Kearns- - West Jordan tilt. Plans called for that to be played in the early afternoon at West Jordan, after which Kearns, if victorious, would hop a bus for Hillcrest to meet conthe winner of an test. The winner of that game will travel to Roy or Weber today or tomorrow for a playoff, with the winstate ner making the eight-teatournament field. 4 No matter what the outcome of Wednesdays games, the Cougars robbed Hillcrest of the region baseball title and forced the Huskies to fight for a state tourney berth in the playoff system. Jardon led through much of the competition but was edged out when champion Laura Zaugg of Clearfield captured the run to pull ahead for good. Zaugg compiled 4,033 points in the seven-evecompetition to 3,858 for Jardon, Murrays ace. Two Judge girls finished in the top six. Ann Ehresmann was fourth, while Kendra Peters finished sixth. In the boys decathlon, Judges Scott was 11th. Olsen, meanwhile, was the only individual champion from the Green Sheet area.
