Show One of the unfortunate byproducts of the dating ritual is geeking out. Geek outs tend to happen more frequently on dates (an observation culled from personal experience and numerous conversations) because youre trying so hard to be extra impressive. To be extra debonaire, extra witty or At one time or another, just about is afflicted with everyone a extra cool. But you know that efforts to cor- rect it in will mid-strea- just make it worse and make you look not like a geek but a nerd, which is in a completely distinct and far more unimpressive category. Everyone has the capability of geeking out. And we all know when its happening. Nerds geek out a lot and never know it. By Several Classes I didnt know precisely where the restaurant was, but Id lived here all my life and was sure I could find it. I did, too, but only after mistakenly taking a scenic tour of West Second South in the Howe days when commerce was still quite active in that part Fortunately, theyre generally funnier in retrospect. At the risk of revealing personally embarrassing moments, Technically, a geek is described in some dictionaries as a performer of grotesque or depraved acts in a carnival, such as biting off the head of a live chicken. Truly a crude act. Its modern meaning is not nearly so repugnant. More humorous actually. But there does seem to be some correlation between the feeling you would have in the pit of your stomach after having watched that wretched activity and the one you have after badly geeking out on a big date. After all, if you commit a bad when you youre geeking fine. dull-witte- can stop it. Some of the worst with an upper classman for a couple of years. He graduated, so now she was available. And I was nervous. My plans were to go to a play and then get a bite to eat. Pretty standard stuff. The play went geek with the wrong person youll probably never get a date with that person again. On the other hand, geek outs can be beneficial. Theyre a way of breaking the ice. If you geek out with a date who recognizes a geek out for what it is, it can establish a good rapport. But you never know for sure at the moment it occurs. I will illustrate to attempt pre-Alle- n how of town. geek outs have played a role in of several the establishment e relationships. Some are my experiences, some are those of others. I wont name them to protect their reputation and my physical wellbeing. Starting with one of my own, I was in high school when, after much procrastination, I got up the nerve to ask a pretty cheerleader out for a date. She was so pretty that shed gone out I male-femal- was seafood. The participants were a young couple, close acquaintances of mine, on their first date. As the story goes, dinner was coming off quite well when it came time to eat steamed clams. Normally, the steaming process causes the clam shell to open so only a little prying is necessary to get at the contents. Normally. This, however, was a first date so naturally the clam shells remained closed. She was the first to try the clams. Using a nutcracker-lik- e clamcracker, she applied a little force to the shell. It didnt budge. So she gave it a big squeeze and the shell cracked open. But in doing so she shot clam junk onto his new sports coat. Geekism had struck. Things evened out when he got her back just the same way a couple of minutes later. A pair of geeks always even themselves out, like two wrongs making a right. So did guy get girl or vice versa? The jury, Im told, is still out on that one. out to the bar. Having been in a minor traffic accident shortly beforehand, he was extra cautious leaving the parking lot. After all, getting into a wreck on the first date is something only a nerd would do. He looked both ways and made sure no cars were coming before making the left hand turn out of the parking lot. Imagine how mortified he was when his car was jolted sharply, first on the left front tire, then the right front, followed by the two rear wheels. In his concentration on other vehicles, he had overlooked one small detail - the island. She laughed her head off and called him a geek right to his face. He got the girl. -- didnt get the girl. Another example. A friend of mine in Denver was quite excited about the prospect of taking out a girl whom he found quite attractive. He went a standard route also, dinner followed by a couple of drinks at one of Denvers nicer quiet, respectable bars. The dinner portion went smoothly and they were heading In the spirit of equal opportunity and nondiscrimination, its comforting to know that women geek out too. The setting for this anecdote was a fashionable Salt Lake City eating establishment. The fare - Computers In Constant Use At KHS KEARNS. The computer age is very much in evidence at Kearns high, where students are learning their value in several areas. A new computer area has been opened in the business department, where word processors are in use in both day school and evening community school classes, said teacher Ray Shepherd. These machines are being used constantly, and strictly for educational purposes, not game playing, he remarked. Our goal is to help the students become computer literate. To feel comfortable with them. We feel they will find computers playing an increasingly big role in home life as well as careers and jobs, and computer literacy is becoming as necessary as English or math, he observed. The machines are in use as word processors, in data processing and other business areas, with 50 students enrolled in the regular classes and eight in evening classes this term, Mr. Shepherd said. We have classes in beginning and advanced word processing in our evening classes, but have to limit the number of participants because of having eight machines. We think it highly possible that in five years or so the schools will turn completely from typewriters to word processors, he added. We have 25 students working with computers in our math classes, said teacher Gary Cleverand, if we only had more ly, machines, we could easily have 75, (See Page 16B, Col. 1) only Krogh and Alesia Powers.
