It had no monitor, no mouse, and no keyboard; all it had was a set of toggle switches and some blinking lights. A club was formed where people got together and tried to find something useful to do with the Altair. The first personal computer was the Apple II, a computer based on the Apple I, invented by Steve Wozniak. Its success made I.B.M. Corporation nervous, so they began producing their own personal commass-produc- puter. I.B.M. went to Bill Gates, a I larvard dropout, for their operating system. At that time Microsoft did not have an operating system, so they referred I.B.M. to a man who did. I.B.M. did not like the reception they got from the other man's wife and lawyer, so they went back to Microsoft. At that point Microsoft bought (Quick and Dirty Operating System) from yet another man. The funny part is, QDOS was really just a pirated version of another operating system. PCs came about when Compaq a key chip in the I.B.M. PC. The practice of though considered underhanded and unethical by many, was perfectly legal, so I.B.M. was PCs that helpless to prevent the flood of effectively stole their niche in the PC market. The first GUI (graphical user interface) was not an invention of either Microsoft or Apple. I was, in fact, invented by Xerox. Xeroxs board of directors refused to take the project forward, though, so the Xerox team working on the GUI showed their invention to Steve Jobs, the thcn-CLof Apple Computer. From what he saw there, Jobs pressed his team into the invention of the Macintosh, the first personal computer to use GUI. a mouse, and 3.5" floppies. Microsoft then proceeded to rip off the Mac OS, producing Windows.
