Much more important, he said, is the teaching staff a facility does not teach; people teach, he said. The same is true of any educational institution, our local elementary schools and junior high schools, as well as our high schools well-equipp- ed and universities. Last week, the Lakeside Review was invited by two parents to cover a meeting between a group of upset parents and the principal of a lakeside community high school. The parents were protesting what they said was a poor relationship between their children and a teacher. Basically, they charged the teacher with incompetence and a lack of trust in his students . The principal, caught in the middle where he probably often finds himself, did a good job of being noncommital with the group and, at the same time, defending the teachers right to set policies and letting the parents know it is their responsibility to talk with the teacher first, not an administrator, when they feel there is a problem. The parents were, variously, concerned, irate and vehement about the situation. They said they felt little would be accomplished by individually contacting the teacher and the principal. They had resorted to a gang effort because they felt they were more apt to be heard. One mother said she had tried in the past to air a grievance with that particular principal and nothing was ever done. I dont really expect anything will be done this time, either, she said fatalistically. , The meeting, which continued for hours in an nearly one and one-haoverheated and crowded office, was an indication of a serious problem. It was a shame that the teacher had let a situation become so severe that seemingly model students were becoming disgrun lf tled and discouraged. It was also indicative of an underlying lack of communicative skills that the parents felt they had to attack the problem en masse instead of using more traditional formulas of addressing a grievance. It seems to us that, while it is necessary for schools to help instill a sense of responsibility in teenagers, their most important job should be to teach the subject. There must be some sort of penalty for irresponsibility but certainly not to the point that a students love of learning is stifled. The teacher, who was not in at- WE CAN FRAME ALL YOUR TREASURES AT MODEST PRICES ipritagf aria 37 So. It must also be noted that this particular teacher has a difficult job in trying to follow footsteps of a very popular former teacher. It is up to the principal now to encourage a satisfactory solution. We - JO H O W.23nA STREET GAR POOL o zz X AND marching band Ghrisflmas GoGa Sale Give your homo a Sofa for Christmas!
