Lkir i 1 ' By Phil Kirkwood Sports Editor t SALT LAKE CITY In order to take the first ever state football championship back to Roy, the Royals knew they must accomplish three things: Shut down the usually wide open and explosive Bonneville passing attack led by Laker quarterback Cory Sylvester; keep the Laker offense out of scoring position with sound punting and kick coverage and control the time of possession with a consistant offense of their own. - And the Royals, for the most part, did a pretty good job. They held Sylvester to a mere 34 yards passing, kept the Lakers out of the end zone for three and one half quarters and just about broke even in time of possession. But one major goal the Royals didnt manage to reach was winning the ball game. And despite all their accomplishments, the game still went to the Lakers 14-- and with that went the state championship. It might be said that the sub freezing 0 temperatures at game time had something to do with the Royals sub standard offensive showing. But then, Bonneville still managed to put seven points on the board with its offense and another seven with its defense on the same field and under the same conditions as the Royals. First Time For Both It also might be said that since the Royals had never been in the final game before they might be a bit tight and make a few mistakes. But the Lakers were playing their first title game in history and the only mistake they made was when Sylvester served up an interception early in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Royals waited until the fourth quarter of a scoreless tie to make their mistakes of which two led directly to both Laker scores. The first coming on a four-yar- d run by Bryn Potter with five minutes left in the game. The score was set up when Roy quarterback Wade Jacklin fumbled on his own 32 and from there the Lakers went the distance on three straight running plays. The second happened when Jacklin threw his only interception of the game and linebacker Mike Wilson made the most of it by rambling the remaining 27 yards for the insurance score. Truly, if any aspect of the contest does warrant mention, it would be the Laker defense. Not only did they shut the Royals out but they held them to just 96 net yards, six first downs and didnt allow them to cross the mid-fiel- d stripe until late in the third quarter. They also sacked Jacklin seven times for a minus total of 74 yards and held the Royal ground game to less than two yards per carry. We took a look at the game films of our first game with Roy (which the and made some Royals won adjustments, said Laker coach Tom Budge referring to the defensive Showing. We tried some new things on defense and did some old things differently and they worked well for us today. 24-1- New Defense One adjustment the Lakers needed to make in order to keep the Royals pinned down deep in their own territory was to halt the explosive scrambling attack offered by Jacklin. They did this defense by using a containment which required Laker defensive linemen to circle Jacklin and prevent him from running outside the pocket. Defensive end Norm Haney and defensive tackle Dan Hunter used the new idea to the maximum as they contained, circled and sacked Jacklin all afternoon while holding him to just 30 yards rushing and 50 yards passing. Said Budge about shutting out the Royals, I couldnt be happier with the way the defense played today. We needed to control the ball and the tempo of the game to win and thats exactly what the defense let us do. We got behind early in the first game and they forced us to pass a lot and play catch-u- p football. We prevented that from happening today and thats why we won. Wilson led the defense by recovering all three of the Royal fumbles as well as the interception. BONNEVILLE DEFENSIVE End Norm Haney belts Royal quarterback Wade Jacklin from the blind side to force an incomplete pass. Haney, along with the rest of the Laker defensive linemen put pressure on Jacklin all afternoon and held him to just 50 yards passing. Aside from the obvious Laker defensive shutout couple with the fact that the Laker offense only turned the ball over once and had zero yards lost to penalties, the deciding game factor was clearly field position. Both coaches knew the game would come down to who got the ball where and how often and who kept the ball the longest. And from the onset, it was evident that Bonneville had control as virtually the entire game was played on the Royal half of the field. LAKER RUNNING BACK Bryn Potter races around left end to score wluit proved to be the winning touchdown. Potter was the leading ground gainer in the game with 53 yards on 1 1 carries. si.fr Pbo.o b u, Every Royal offensive drive began on or inside their own line with the majority starting inside the 0. Royal punter Brad McCauney was forced to punt seven times from deep in Roy territory. And with each change of possession the Lakers found themselves with first and ten on or near midfield. Although the Laker offense failed to capitalize until late in the game, the battle of field position forced the Royal offense to play conservative. And thats not how Jacklin and company like to do team at 1 while the Royals wrapped the season at The Royals promise to be strong contenders for next years title as all but seven varsity starters will be back next year including Jacklin and standout tight end Bart Hadley. The Royals will also take advantage of younger players coming up from this years junior varsity team which went undefeated. Although the Lakers will be losing many starters to graduation, including Sylvester and Wilson, Budge says his team will be strong and will be in the running for next years title. things.
