West Vikings For 11 A Title - other hand, West was doing everything right on offense and On the SALT LAKE CITY West football coach Gene Plaga had good reason to smile last Friday afternoon. After three straight years of playing in the championship game his Panther squad title by blasting finally won the Viewmont 31-- at Rice stadium on the University of Utah campus. The Panthers, who had been accused of being over confident in their previous two state title losses, were again the only this time they heavy favorites made sure the oddsmakers were right in their predictions. And Viewmont found out in a hurry just how badly Plagas crew wanted the golden trophy as a host of West tacklers crashed into the Vikings Jeff Porter seconds after he fielded the opening kick off and jarred the ball loose. especially on the ground. Led by tailback Roger Shields who rushed for a game high 115 yards on 15 carries, the Panther ground attack pounded out 325 yards chewing up the clock with long drives. 3-- After the opening score, the Panthers didnt waste any time going back for more as quarterback Ford Huffacker tossed a touchdown pass of 27 yards to wide receiver Clark Estaban with 7:33 gone in the first quarter. All State linebacker Mark Blosh, who also place kicks and plays offensive guard, drilled a field goal in the second quarter, intercepted a pass in the third and kicked all four Panther extra points. In the second half, West went right back to the ground game and scored early when halfback Tony Barnes blasted over from 12 yards out. West scored on the ground again on its next fourth-and-on- e 38-ya- Panther guard Vance Price then scooped up the fumble and rambled 27 yards for the first score with only eight seconds gone in the game. Scoring on that fumble really set the stage for the rest of the game, said Plaga after the win. I think it took them (Viewmont) a while to recover and we took advantage of that by keeping the pressure on. possession when Kevin Davis broke off a end sweep. It was clear that the Panthers, who Plaga deemed too young to win the state champiohship at the beginning of the season, had come of age. This one meant a lot to me, said Blosh who had been in the previous two state title games and was the spiritual leader of his younger teammates. We didnt have such a great start, but we pulled together and played as a team from the third game on. But then again, no one, absolutely no one, gave the Vikings much of a chance make it to the tournament; let alone the final game. For that matter West, which lost its first two games to Judge Memorial and East, didnt appear to be much of a threat early in the season either. But the Panthers just got better the year went on. And after taking the Region 5 crown, West was just too strong for the Vikings. Defensive Pressure And if anything could be credited with putting the pressure on, it was the panther defense as they didn't allow Viewmont a first down until late in the first half and didnt allow a pass completion until midway through the third quarter. Most of the reason for Viewmont's passing woes was due to the vicious rush put on by the Panther front line. Viewmonts usually high percentage passing quarterback, Kyle Morrell hit on only 4 of 16 passes, suffered two interceptions and was sacked five times for losses. Viewmont finally scored late in the game when Morrell went over from one yard out on a quarterback sneak.
