Population in East Mill Creek continuedto rise, peaking in 1970 when 24,250 residents called the community home. Since 1970 the numbers have dwindled slightly, the result of an aging population and decreasing supply of buildable land. East Mill Creek has two community parks — Evergreen Park, located at a mal baseball diamonds, one volleyball _first mill in the Salt Lake Valley. Creeek area. court and playground andpicnic facilities. Olympus Hills Park, all 33.4 acres of it, is where mostof the outdoor activity takes place in East Mill Creek. Among other amenities, the park features eight tennis courts, two baseball diamonds that double as a soccer field and a handicapped-accessible pedestrian path. The mill, which was located near the presentintersection of Evergreen and Oakwood, marked the beginning of both residential and commercial developmentin the Mill Creek area. After establishing the mill, Neff moved his family out to the mill site, thus becoming oneofthe earliest known settlers of the community. Archibald Gardner, another of the early pioneers that helped settle the area, also constructed a mill in Mill Creek near the present intersection of Highland Drive and Murphy’s Lane. This mill was largely responsible for producing the majority of lumber that wasused in building many ofthe early homesand buildings in the East Mill The first public building in East Mill Creek,a simple structure measuring 24 feet by 26 feet, was constructed in 1854. Residents of the community, whichconsisted largely of farmers who were attracted to the rich land, helped transport logs from the nearby canyon and construct the meeting house. The Historical Origins: The Mill Creek community was namedafter the many grist, lumber and shingle mills that began sprouting up along the banks of the Mill Creek stream in the late 1840s. John Neff, who built a mill on the stream in 1848 near a small grove of trees, is credited with constructing the 2220 East and 3435 South and Olympus Hills Community Park located at 3131 East 4500 South.
