So, you're actually building your own deck. Not having fun yet? Well, if you've donethe concrete footers (to support the posts that support the deck) and the ledger board (whichallowsfastening the deck to the house), you've probably done the most strenuouspart. Nowit’s time tostart creating the structure of your deck. Cheer up — this part is only painstaking and tedious. First step, the posts: These support the edge of the deck on the opposite side from the ledger, in other words, the yard side. Findthe best 6-by-6 pressure-treated posts you can. Makesure that they are square and virtually free of cracks. You must make braces to support the posts while they’re beinginstalled. Drive stakes into the groundat each post location about three feet out at perpendicular angles — oneoff the front face, say, and oneeff the side face. Use onenail to tack furring strips to each of the perpendicular sides of the posts about halfway up so the sirips can be swiveled to form a 45-degree angle whenthey are attached to the stakes. Attach the post anchors to the posts, making sure the post bottoms are cut square and treated with extra wood preservative. Check thatthe posts are plumb(perfectly vertical) from two adjacentsides, then secure the braces to the stakes. Clampinglevels to two adjacent sides ofthe post will free your hands while you are manipulating the postto getit plumb. This step is important, so take yourtime andgetit right. You may wantto use a long level, such as a 6foot framinglevel, because posts sometimes are bowed, and you OPEN HOUSES CENTENNIAL HEIGHTS - DRAPER 553-3400 Bluffdale exit LOT 71 Highland Drive & Traverse Ridge Road Rambler, 3 bdrm., 2 bath, decks off master bdrm, & kitchen area, 1288 sq. ft. $168,740 LOT72 Multilevel, 3 bdrm. 2 1/2 bath, fencedyard, fire place, 1813 sq. f. $185,740 LOT 76 - Rambier, 3 bdrm, 2 bath, 3 car garage, 1288 sq ft $170, Lor Story, 4 Bdrm, 2 2 bath, nily rm,, bonus rm. walk out basement, full stucco, kitchen nd, air conditio oning, approx, 2483 sq. ft. $219,190 UTAH VISTA - WEST JORDAN 280-5911 Old Bingham Hwy. & 4700 West LOT207 3 Bdrm, 21/2 bath, coachlamps, Le front yard w/top soil * 3000sq.ft. sod delivered, 1760 sc 1,990 : Lot 214 3 Bdrm, 22 top soil added & 3,0 OT 220 - 4 Bdrm 2 bath, fire ice microwave. front yard topsoll added& 3,000 sq, f ft. $162,990 LOT 217 4 Bdrm, 2 1/2 bath, fireplace w/glass doors, loft, oak handrail, upgraded llooring, front yard top sol added & 3.000 sq.ft. sod delivered. 2245 sq. ft. $ WHEATRIDGE ESTATES WEST JORDAN 280-2575 New Bingham Hwy. & 5300 West LOT 489 Rambles, 3 bdrm. 2 bath, premium replac e, bay in nook, 1524 sq. t . $147, LOT 434 Rambler, 3 bdrm, 2 bath, fireplace central air, tae ft $156.1 LOT 427 Ram 3 bdrm., 2bath, 3 car garage, dencc pnversion, 2 sidedfireplace sq. ft $160,605 5 Multhievel. 4 barn, 3 bath, come 1 lot, fireplace, coach 171,070 one board at a time want to span the bows. Plumball the posts and use string to ensure they are lined up equidistant from the house. Do not tighten the post bases yet. because most likely you will be taking the posts downagain to cut notches in the top to support the main sandwich beam ofthe deck. ‘There are two ways to mark the top of your posts for cutting. Thefirst is to lay a straight 2-by-4 on top ofthe ledger (sight alongthe top ofthe board to checkits straightness). Lay your level on top of the 2-by-4 and adjust the board untilit is level and then mark where the bottom ofthe 2-by-4hits on the post This gives you the samepoint on each post. Then measure down from that markthe depth ofthe ledger and mark that. The posts will be cut off even with the bottom ofthe iedger. Mostdecksare supported on the outside edge by a beam that is notched into the post tops. The beam supports the joists, mounted onthe ledger. Measure the depth of your beam lumberon the inside and the outside ofthe post, starting with the level mark. (The beamsare usually 2-by-10s or 2-by-12s. Lumberis actually a haif-inch smalier than its stated measurement, so a 2-by10 would be 11/2 inches thick and 91/2 inches deep). Whenthe tops of the pests are cut off, they will be level with the tops of the beams. Measure the width of the beam you are mounting on top ofthe posts (usually 11/2 inches). Mark this point on the posts. Set the saw to a 11/2-inch depth and make repeated horizontal cuts on the inside and outside ofthe post, chiseling out the waste to leave a tongue of wood between the notches. Dothis on each post. Once the notchesare cut, place the beamsin the notches anddrill holes 11/2 inches from the top and from the bottomon eachpost, through the outside beam, the tongueofthe post, and the inside beam. Insert 1/2-inch car- riage bolts about 7 incheslong to accommodate a washeranda nut on the inside of the beam. You may wantto borrow or buy a water level (they are not expensive). They’re extremely accurate and come in handy when you must make repeated marksat the same height. Most water levels come with 25 or 50 feet of tubing. Oncethelevel is set up, one person easily can mark all the posts. You do have to makesure that the water is care- fully filled in the tubing so there are no bubbles to make your measurements inaccurate. Thesafestplaceto cut the posts is on sawhorses onthe ground. It’s possible to cut a postin place, butit requires great care. You need place to stand that is solid, such as scaffolding — or on the groundif yourposts are low enough. Don’t stand on the top of a stepladderortrash can with a saw. However,if you insist on sawing the post in place, braceit firmly. You may wantto clampa carpenter’s square to the post to guide and support the saw as it cuts. A standard 71/4-inch diametercircular saw can’t cut through a 6-by-6 in one cut, so you mustto cutit from atleast three sides and maybe four. To get a good squarecut, the cutlines must be exactly lined up with each other, and the blade of the saw must be perpendicular to the saw’s base plate, or shoe. Making a four-sided wooden cutting jig that can be clamped onto the post also may simplify the work and make your cut very accurate. It will help you align saw cuts fromopposite sides of a post, with only one mark, such as for the notches, Touse the jig, measure the distance from the edge ofthe base ofthe saw to the blade (Randy’s saw measures 51/8 inches), and then mountthe jig on the post, set back the same width as from the edge ofthe basetothe blade. If you build your jig slightly larger than your posts it will slide up and down more easily. Also, you can use thisjig if you are taking your posts downandplacing them on sawhorses. Oncetheposts are trimmed and notched,re-install them (if you didn’t cut them in place) and recheck for plumb. Also recheck your measurements from the ledger. If everything is still plumb, level and the posts areall the samedistance from the house, secure the bolts in the post anchors to the concrete, and tighten up the carriage bolts. Brace the post and beam structure at each endsoit’s temporarily connected to the ledger. That way, nothing will blow over while you are preparing for the nextstep:installing thejoists. ye) asa) * PERSONAL SERVICE ° FAST * FRIENDLY 1-15 Kaysville Exit, West One Half Mile, Then South On Kays Drive, East On 75 North Builders Welcome ASSOCIATED MORTGAGE - 943-1999 Funding The American Dream barat eet a FIXED 7.75% APR 273-8300 225-9757 SALT LAKE UTAH COUNTY | KIZZ TV ess Saturdays at llam "Your Guide To Homes" TV Show!
