Manufacturers offered generously sized sofas piled with pillows, welcomingrecliners and the chair-anda-half that you don’t haveto share. “We are moving back to a contemporary look with a lot of comfort that will stick,” said John Mascheroni, furniture designer and president of Swaim, a manufacturer of contemporary furniture. “People will not give up comfort for a stark style. People wantto relax; they are much more casual. We are goingto see roll armsfor a long time.” Here are some of the furnishings that will begin appearingin stores by early fall: * The comfort factor. Shelter sofas — popular in the late 1970s — offer high backs and arms for serious cocooning. Some sofas have a ratchet back and arms that move up or down like lawn furniture, allowingthesitter to find his own comfort level. Ottomansare everywhere in many sizes and shapes, from geot metrics to that ized squares or KnicHT-Riwper Newspapers HIGH POINT,N.C. — Fumiture manufacturers do not claim to be clairvoyant, but at least twoc: ies are , Shootinglike a scratch golfer with their “new line of golf-themed furnishings. Pillows abound, covered in needle- point, tapestry, faded floral designs and in accentsolids. “Envelope”pillows pillows where the fabricisfitted like a business envelope — fastened with big buttons team up with contemporary sofas. * Furniture that works. The dropleaf table has been aroundfor centuries, but never more needed by cramped apartmentdwellers and homeowners who can always use an extra table for parties and holidays. Many manufacturers showed versions of the dropleaf, from chair-side to dining tables. Some buffets have leaves on the side that pull up for an extended serving surface. « For cigar smokers. Humidors are a hot new accessory, proving that furni- ture manufacturers are aware of the growing popularity ofcigars.
