Winner will be named in March at Garden Festival by Genevieve W E ARE happy and proud that the Intermountain Areas prelude to spring, the annual Spring Garden Festival, will be held March 13, 14 and 15 at the Terrace, 464 S. Main St. This years exposition will include all the wonderful features of past years together with some new ideas you are certain to enjoy. Place a circle around the dates (March 13, 14, 15) on your calendar and plan to spend all three days at the Fes- to announce tival. , One of the favorite attractions at the Festival is when the Gardner of the Year is honored. So will you please help us find Utahs best gardener? Look around at your neigh- bors or gardening friends and consider the one who has the most beautiful garden or who has done an outstanding job beautifying the community. In the past, we have had win H. Folsom ners whose claim to fame was the sharing of the plants and flowers of their garden with others, while other winners have been individuals who have spearheaded community beautification projects. IT IS NOT necessary to be a member of a garden club or other organization to enter the contest. We hope, however, that many nominees will be sent in from these groups. Prizes include a beautiful trophy, plus an trip to the Festival if winner is from out of town. A winner from the Salt Lake area will receive a trophy and a gift of planting materials for the garden. Here are the rules: 1. Write a letter stating the individuals name and address and what he or she has accomplished in gardening or beautification work. For this reason alone, many green thumbers maintain a small plot in their garden where they grow their favorite vegetables. Tomatoes and cucumbers are two of the favorites. While most of the vegetables can be planted from seed sown outdoors after danger of frost, there are some which must be started early indoors. Of course, it is far easier to purchase plants from your nurseryman, but if you have time and a nice sunny window it is fun to start your own plants. Peppers, eggplants and tomatoes must be started early. March is a good time. While you can use a regular seed flat for this purpose, there are many other containers. There are individual pots made of peat moss or other organic material in which seeds can be planted. These are planted right out into the garden at the proper time, pot and all. The eggplant, started indoors for early yield, is another interesting and nutritious vegetable. will bloom as vegetables IF YOU USE soil for planting seeds indoors, it need not be rich. You will find equal parts of soil, sand, compost or peat moss good. Put it through a sieve. Place some coarse material in bottom of flat for good drainage, then the soil mixture. Water thoroughly and plant Place a pane of glass over flat and shade with a newspaper. Remove when the seeds have germinated. Transplant when the true leaves form. Some people like to use milled sphagnum moss for planting seeds indoors. In addition to such things as peat moss pots, there are other items obtainable to make your tasks easier. You can purchase bedding plant trays of polystyrene that are properly drained yet have a bottom section which is waterproof to protect window-sills- . One company offers a seed starter kit which contains fiber flats, milled sphagnum moss, labels, organic pots, and a heating cable to give bottom heat. All this for less than $5 will give you everything for starting seeds indoors.
