Show Stakes in Taiwan, Hong Kong Units Also Formed in Chile; Reorganized in Mexico, Utah The Taipei Taiwan Stake and the Hong Kong Stake, the first two stakes to g be formed among people, were organized April 22 and April 25, respectively. Elder Gordon B. Hinckley of the Council of the Twelve presided at the two stake conferences. He was assisted by Elder Adney Y. Komatsu, an Assistant to the Twelve and area supervisor for the Far East. It was a source of great satisfaction to participate in the organization of these stakes, the first among the Chinese people, said Elder Hinckley. Tve had assignments in Asia since 1960, and now to witness the organization of stakes in China with strong and faithful leaders has been a tremendous experience. The new stake, which contains 3,410 members, was formed from the Hong Kong Mission. It is comprised of the Hong Kong 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th wards and the Hong Kong 1st and 6th branches. TAIPE! TAIWAN STAKE Missionary work to the Chinese was first attempted in 1853, when three missionaries were called to the Chinese Mission. It has 4,497 members. The gospel was first preached in Taiwan when four missionaries from the Southern Far East Mission sailed there from Hong Kong to begin missionary work. The first convert in Taiwan, Thomas V. Kintaro, was baptized on Jun-shen- July 22, Kan-leun- Because conditions there were difficult and hampered by a lack of understanding the language, revolution and persecution, the missionaries returned to the United States in late 1853. Sixty-eigyears later, on Jan. 9, 1921, Elder David 0. McKay, then of the Council of the Twelve, with Hugh J. Cannon, dedicated the land of China at Peking for the preaching of the gospel. Missionary work in China, however, was not officially established until 1949, when Elder Matthew Cowley of the Council of the Twelve visited China and opened a mission in Hong Kong. This effort was cut short in 1950 because of the Korean conflict and revolution in g. ht 1956. By the end of 1957, 50 people had been' baptized in Taiwan. Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Council of the Twelve visited Taiwan in 1959 and officially dedicated the country for the preaching of the gospel. By the end of 1959 there were eight branches in Taiwan. On Jan. 11, 1971, the Hong Mission was divided and Malan R. Jackson became the first president of the new Taiwan Taipei Mission. The new stake president, 57, was horn in Tung Men, China. He is a convert to the Church and was baptized Feb. 16, 1963, in Hsin Chu, Taiwan. He married Using Chuang Nov. 18, 1951, and they have four children. He has served as a branch presidents counselor, branch president, district presidents counselor and district president. He is a high school mathematics teacher. Pres. 62, was bom in Canton, China. Also a convert, he was baptized May 8, 1958, in Taipei, Taiwan. Dec. 28, 1944, and He married Wu they are the parents of three children. Jlis past positions include branch president, district president, counselor in the Southern Far East Mission and district councilor. He is a professor in the department of zoology at National Taiwan University. Pres. 32, was bora in Qanton,, China, He, is, a convert, to the China. The missionaries returned in 1955 and began to have success. The Southern Far East Mission was formed from the Japanese Mission and missionary work in Hong Kong began to flourish. Pres. Poon, 30, was bora in Shanghai, China. He is a convert to the Church and was baptized June 7, 1958, in Hong Kong. He married Eliza Lau Aug. 4, 1971, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have two children. The new stake president, who is a jeweler and owner of Sheldon Poon & Co., has served as a branch president, district presidents counselor, district president and mission presidents counselor. Pres. Ng, 45, was bora in Hong Kong. Also a convert, he was baptized May 31, 1956, in Hong Kong. He married Pang r Feb. 21, 1949, in Hong Kong, and they are the parents of seven children. His past positions include president of two branches, district president and mission presidents counselor. Pres. Ng is manager of the Church Distribution Center in Hong Kong. Pres. Au, 31, was bora in Hong Kong. He joined the Church on Dec. 29, 1958, in Kong-Taiwa- n Jun-shen- 1853. April 27, Yu-Pin- g Lai-ha- g, I-- Hong Kong. He married Cheung Shiu Ling Dec. 12, 1972, in the Hawaii Temple and they are the parents of two sons. Pres. Au, a bank officer, has served as a Kan-leun- g, , district clerk, branch president, district president and district councilor. Julio H. Jaramillo B. Servando Rojas O. SANTIAGO CHILE REPUBLICA STAKE Julio Humberto Jaramillo B. was sustained as president of the new Santiago Chile Republica Stake April 18. Sustained as his counselors were Polibio Ernesto Gonzalez G. and Gabriel Angel Campos C. Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Council of the Twelve presided at the stake conference, and Elder William R. Bradford, an Assistant to the Twelve, assisted. The Santiago Chile Republica Stake was one of three new stakes which were formed from the existing Santiago Chile and Santiago Chile North Stakes. The stake consists of the Quinta Normal, Huelen, Maipu, Cinco de Abril, Republica, Parque OHiggins, and the San Miguel 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th wards. It has 3,296 members. Pres. Jaramillo, 43, was born in Santiago, Chile. A convert to the Church, he was baptized Aug. 3, 1968, in Santiago. He married Maria Meza C. Feb. 7, 1959, and they have four children. The new stake president, who is an administrative adviser for Church schools in Chile, has been a branch presidents counselor, branch president, district presidents counselor and stake presidents counselor. Pres. Gonzalez, 36, was born in Concepcion, Chile. Ilis is also a conver-tanwas baptized April 4, 1959, in Concepcion. He married Maria Gutierrez G. Feb. 10, 1968, and they have three children. His past positions include branch presidents counselor, branch president, district councilor and high councilor. He is a construction d Pres. Campos, 28, was born in t K. Roger Bean Talcahuano, Chile, lie joined the Church May 2, 1965, in Vina del Mar, Chile. He married Teresa Lopez S. Jan. 27, 1972, and they have two children. Pres. Campos, an automotive mechanical instructor, has served as a branch secretary, district secretary, branch president and high councilor. SANTIAGO CHILE PROVIDENCIA STAKE The Santiago Chile Providencia Stake, the fourth stake to be formed in that country, was organized April 11 by Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Council of the Twelve. The stake organization was part of an action in which the existing Santiago Chile and Santiago Chile South stakes were organized into three stakes the Santiago Chile Providencia Stake, the Santiago Chile La Cistema Stake and the Santiago Chile Republica Stake. Elder William R. Bradford, an Assistant to the Twelve, and Elder Carlos A. Cifuentes, Regional Representative of the Twelve, assisted Elder McConkie at the stake conference. Jaime F. Villalobos T. was sustained as president of the Providencia stake and Gustavo A. Barrios and Armando Ide L. were sustained as his counselors. The new stake consists of the Renca, Independencia, Recolta, Providencia, Las Condes, Nunoa, La Reina and Macul wards. It has 3,022 members. The new stake president, who is 47, was bom in Vina del Mar, Chile. A convert to the Church, he was baptized Sept. 8, 1962, in Talcahuano, Chile. He married Susana D.
