Show V IN THIS ISSUE Everything locked fine in the backyard when Vaughn and Marjorie Spendlove left in early May for a three-datrip to Sterling, Colo. y The lawn was neat and beautiful, as usual. When they returned, however, they discovered that 414 square feet of their yard had been dug up. They were delighted. Instead of the lawn there was a tilled and furrowed ready-to-plagarden plot. MOORE Moments In History 1834 Zion's 15, Springfield, Ohio continued west, passing through Camp the beautiful country of Ohio. Members forded Mud River and camped a little west of Springfield. During the night watch, one of the sentries, Moses Martin, fell asleep and was discovered by the Prophet Joseph Smith. I took his sword, and left him asleep, the Prophet said, but did not record the outcome. May 1841 The Prophet Nauvoo, May Joseph Smith was delighted with missionary efforts for he wrote, Good 15, that city and vicinity. Of these, 170 were who previously professed Ryots, Christianity. 1855 May 15, Farmington, Utah Thomas S. Smith headed a group of members who left to establish a mission among the Bannock and Shoshone Indians. The call to the Oregon Territory came during the annual conference in Salt Lake City. A month of very difficult travel was necessary to reach the wilderness site on the Lemhi River w here they began a settlement. news has recently reached us from Tennessee, New York, Upper Canada and New Orleans. The elders are baptizing in all directions. 1842 News of the May 15, Nauvoo, 111. attempted assassination of Gov. Lilbum W. Boggs was confirmed and was of sufficient public interest to be announced during the Sunday meetings in Nauvoo. By August they had erected a fort and built seven houses and a blacksmith shop. Several acres were planted and considerable fencing done. They called the settlement Fort Lemhi after King Limhi of the Book of Mormon, though they spelled it with an e. The settlement proved a success; the Indians were anxious to learn the w hite mans ways of agriculture. A second fort was built and the community prospered until on Feb. 25, 1858, a large party of Indians attacked the fort, killing two men and wounding Pres. Smith and others. This led to the abandonment of Fort Lemhi and the end of the Salmon River Mission. 1843 Emma with her husbands carriage and they spent some time riding together. As they stopped at one point, George A. Smith and Wilford Woodruff, who were riding in the Prophets buggy, asked if the horse would stand without tying. Yes, the Prophet answered, but never trust property to the mercy or judgment of a horse. Yelrome, III. Black was the first Latter-da- y Saint settler to draw attention to the natural wonder about 1862. It became known as Josephs Glory. Later, Isaac Bchunin, the first settler of Ephraim, Utah, took up land in the canyon and called it Zion. In 1913 Gov, William Spry of Utah visited the canyon and was so pleased that he reported to Sen. Reed Smoot, and through whose influence, $15,000 was appropriated to build a road to the entrance of the canyon. The popularity of the area grew until it was set apart as a national park in 1919 and officially opened six years later."
