(UPI) there is an abundance of jobs for bank, managers in Alaska because the state is developing so fast. Robert Bulmer, an account executive for Management Recuiters, said here while on a talent search this week that Alaska's 300,000 population does not fill its management needs. lie said most management jobs in Alaska pay from $18,000 to $40,000 or $50,000. "We are looking for people who will become stable, permanent Alaskans." ir ITer . The public acc,Ttance of the ESA engine this year has taken the company's hierarchy by surprise. Loolbourrow said. Only one model, the 400 cubic-inc8 engine has ESA and the company planned to build no more than 75,000 of these engines during the 1976 model year. The ESA engine was a late introduction item with no advance advertising program. Word got around through the news media and magazines so that by the time the engines were available, dealer.; had backlogs of orders. "It looks like we might build 150,000 ofI the ESA engines this year," Loofburrow said with a pleased grin. The engine is in demand for several reasons. It meets the current emission standards without the use of a catalyst and thus can burn regular leaded fuel. This means a saving in fuel costs. like the engines of the Driveability is excellent control era. The engine starts promptly, doesn't die, takes hold with no hesitation and produces no surge when the driver is trying to hold the car at constant speed, said Loofbourrow. It provides the same or better fuel economy as does the engine with the catalyst," he added. The system controls spark plug firing electronically with eight sensors feeding into a minicomputer. It replaces the distributor ,: mechanism including the ''.,r74,;i4.!0,',.77': !.7., now which must ,:ç17,, :70A points ' be replaced periodically itil" :,: The stricter control of t mixfuel the firing permits ,',1;Vv ture to be leaner (less r.;,1MTl, gasoline, more air) result''' '''':-'''' Mg in better economy and !'' In '77, the nitorgen oxide emissions must be cut 4, , to two grams per mile from k, lipi the present permissible Mr. Loofburrow rate of 3.1 grams per mile. Loofbourrow feels his department may, in time, be able to bring the ESA engine into line with the 1977 emission standards or even with more stringent standards of future years without having a catalyst. A lot depends on whether the government stays with its present set of standards or insists on changing them. Status of women opens up new field NEW YORK (UPI) Raising America's corporate conciousness has business. become a multimillion-dolla- r for many new firms specializing in services to upgrade the status of working women. These companies, formed primarily by women entrepreneurs over the past five years, offer a variety of programs to private industry and government employers 'faced with legislation and internal pressure to move women to managerial slots. "Employers now spend $5 million annually on programs for women on consciousness-raising- , motiva- tion, assertiveness, supervisory awareness and special skills," says Jo Kimmel, president and founder of Women's Training arid Resooli:es Corp. Portland. Me., firm The specializes in speech courses for businesswomen who must take a strong verbal position in the office and on the podium. The U.S. Army is among the firm's diverse list of clients. "The women's service field is one of the few industries where the majority of owners are women," says Ms. Kimmel, whose firm has annual sales of more than $200,000. three-year-ol- d d d company whose training program "womanagement" has been piloted by American Telephone & Telegraph. "Most of the participants are in some way responsible for training and arfirmative action in the organizations they work for," according to Ms. Kimmel. The exhibit, which Ms. Kimmel plans to make an annual event, should enable women and businesses alike to discover the resources available to help women move toward the executive suite. Industrial production up 0.7 pct. Industrial (UPI) the physical outpout of production the nation's factories, utilities and continued to advance strongly mines in April, rising 0.7 percent, the Federal Reserve Board said Friday. Although the increase was smaller than March's revised 0.6 percent and February's 1.1 percent, the April rise was still sizeable and reflected "widespread gains in outpout," the Fed said. As in the two previous months. a strong showing in auto assemblies led the overall increase. The board said assemblies rose sharply to 8.6 million units in April, up from March's 8.3 figure. Production for the business equipment induAries was also considerable, the board said, as well as outpout of durable goods materials. Production of construction materials "continued to expand moderately." Industrial production ha,; risen every month since the recession bottomed out April a year ago. The Industrial Production Index now stands at 122.5 percent of the 1967 base of ItK). This is cnly about 4 percent behm the 1973 high, the Fed said. ) 1 i "''''-- :'! At the time, the depot was considered far enough from the West Coast to be safe from any possible enemy attack. Following the war, the need for the center gradually faded and by 1963, its use ended and it was sold by the General Services Administration for $5.1 million to Russell and Kern W. Schumacker of Oakland, Calif. as government surplus prorty. They turned the huge complex of warehouses into a distribution and manufacturing center and within a year had al tenants, leasing from 1,000 to 10,000 square feet of wareholising space. By 1967, there were 47 firms located in the center. Five years ago this month, the center was purchased by Gordon Olch of Salt Lake City and Robert O'Block of New York City for an undisclosed sum. But in that ensuir g five years, the center expanded another 135 acres to a total 735, new buildings have been erected adding 706,000 square feet of space and every building is filled except two. "We are 95 percent full," said Stephen L Barrett, director of economic development for Freeport Center Associates. Since tie first of this year eight new firms have moved into the (enter and 180,000 square feet of floor space have been added to existing structures. Railroad volume alone last year came to 50,000 cars. The complex has become one of the major industrial activities of the Union Pacific Railroad.
