Show Thursday, March 24, 1949 THE Horse Canyon Mine on-sh- ift Safety Features Get Commendation Several recent b e e fi c i a 1 changes and many commendable safety features in the Geneva mine at Horse Canyon, Emery county ,are endorsed in a federal coal mine inspection report released today by the bureau of mines. Several added safeguards also are recommended. This mine, operated by the Geneva Steel company, employed 796 men when H. E. Wetzel completed reinspecting it in February. Safety features embraced adherence to the systematic timbering standards, frequent roof testing, exclusive use of permissible ft explosives for blasting, enough air in circulation, preand weekly examshift, inations for hazards, effective rock dusting to within 80 feet of the working faces, generally good haulage and electrical conditions, adequate fire fighting facilities, use of permissible electric cap lamps underground, and refraining from smoking in the mine. To increase operating safety further, Inspector Wetzel advocated firing each series of shots 5500-ton-a-d- ay on-shi- on-shi- ft, immediately after charging during blasting, putting the covered man-ca- rs in service as soon as received, ventilating the pillar lines in future development by a bleeder entry to the return or other effective means, and always wearing safety goggles for work. Recent beneficial changes included several timbering using curtains in connection with some single doors to prevent short circuiting of air, additional rock dusting, and tightening cover plates and bolts on some permissible e 1 ec t r i c Considerable progequipment. ress also was made in using permissible blasting units, the inspector stated. improve-provemen- ts, Divorce Granted Monday Beverly Bernice Wetzel was granted an interlocutory decree of divorce in the district court Monday severing her marital ties to Robert L. Wetzel. She charged that Mr. Wetzel was addicted to habitual drunkenness. They were married at Greenup, Kentucky, on September 8, 1939. No children were listed in the action. The decree did not grant any alimony to the plaintiff but did grant the restoration of the plaintiffs maiden name, Beverly Bernice Brewer. Try it LARGEST CONTRIBUTOR TO MONTICEllO The largest single contributor of vanadium and uranium to the processing mill at Monticello is the carnotite mine being operated in the southeastern corner of Emery county at Temple mountain. This is a statement credited to Byron Howard, Huntington, and Tom Skidmore, Price, partners in the Temple mountain enterprise which was undertaken in July of last year. The men have stated that they have trucked to date about 3,500 tons over a circuitous route of 154 miles from their Temple mountain site to Monticello. Air distance be- tween the two places is estimated to be about 74 miles. Number of trucks employed in transporting the ore has varied widely since operations were begun. At the height of operations about twenty trucks have been used and several families have lived at the mine. At present, work is suspended due to the impassible condition of the road, Mr. Howard advises. Living accommodations at Temple mountain are afforded by several rock houses which were built by some Japanese who operated the mine in 1914 and in which floors have been laid by Howard and Skidmore. In- discussing uranium development and possibilities of the area, Mr. Howard incidentally disclosed that the March of Time is coming into western Colorado and eastern Utah, chief source of uranium Ip the U. S., to gather feature material for publication. It is seen to be a possibility that, through that medium, Emery county may be brought intcf the national spotlight. Mr. Howard also informed that the ore used by Madame Curie of France in her experiments which led to the discovery of radium, came from the Temple mountain area near the 1890s. Robertson, operator, in Cottonwood Canyon about ten miles northwest of Orangeville, in a reinspection report issued today by the bureau of mines. The Emery county mine employed four men and produced 35 tons of coal a day when Inspector A. J. Kopp examined it in February. The inspector recommended more air for the working places, noting that the mine was ventilated by natural means and the velocity of air in the mine was too low to be measurable. He also proposed completion of closing all the air passages except the last one nearest the faces, providing at least two permissible flame safety lamps, and making preshift and weekly examinations for gas and other hazards. Inspector Kopp advised firing the permissible explosives with suitable electric detonators, and safer underground storage of HIGH SACK TRUCK blasting materials. He endorsed Mod 6419 Whaatbam adopting a systematic timbering Maximum G.V.W. 16,000 lb. he but plan, proposed setting needed props as soon as space is available, and correcting loose roof conditions as detected. While some rock dust had been applied, the inspector said more was needed and it should be carried to within 80 feet of the faces. Other recommendations includ ed adequate unobstructed clear ance space, eliminating electrical ignition and contact hazards, adequate fire fighting equipment, an accurate mine map, making the designated escapeway reasonably with Dump Body travelable by removing falls of Mod 6403 61 inch Wh!bat Maximum G.V.W. 16,000 fc. roof material, posting escapeway direction signs, and adopting a system. positive Permissible electric cap lamps were used, and smoking was not observed, the the inspector noted with approval. cenedbe' than The first sip tells you here finer, richer coffee!
