A federal coal mine inspector endorses several recent beneficial changes and some commendable safety features in the 1,614-ton-a-d- ay Columbia mine, operated by the Geneva Steel company at Columbia, and recommends a few additional safeguards in the report released today by the bureau of mines. When A. J. Kopp reinspected this Carbon county mine in January, 309 men were employed. Safety features embraced effective timbering, frequent rooftesting, exclusive use of permissible explosives and permissible blastblasting units for ing, good ventilation, rock dusting to within 40 feet of the faces, use of water for unobstructed haulageway clearance, well ventilated fireproof structures for the underground switches substations, cut-owhere required, well maintained use of permissible escapeways, electric cap lamps underground, and refraining from smoking in the mine. As further safety aids, Inspector Kopp proposed firing all blasting shots or series immediately after charging on shift, removing excessive coal dust accumulations from roadways, and several elec trical improvements, including a permissible-typ- e pump in place of the recently installed type one. Recent beneficial changes included satisfactory overload protection for the trailing cables of electric, equipment, progress in providing suitable seats in the man cars to eliminate riding under the trolley wire, and safe reinstallation of some power wires on a manway slope. ift g, ut nonper-missib- SfT Utah is coming into Its own Pittsburgheaeo body again in the sale of U. Wells, sergeant first class, local recruiter, stated that although the active forces of the armed services have reached their authorized strength, the reserve units are still far below expectation. The army and air force, said Sergeant Wells, can do their jobs confidently only if they know that there is a large reserve of trained civilians to support them. The campaign is directed ordinarily to members of the ERC who had been discharged- after September 1, 1948, or will be discharged by June 30 of 1949. For these men, certain regulations have been modified so that they can return to the enlisted reserve corps under advantageous conditions. The duties of reservists include attendance at weekly evening training periods. All active members of the ERC receive pay which is scaled according to rank and length of service, both in ERC and the armed forces. Members of the ERC who return to regular service in the army or air force receive longevity pay which includes active duty in the reserves. ii Theres nothing like it absolutely nothing . . . - Product of Standard of California A Carbon trouble?
