Now we need someone to come up with a way of training dogs to differentiate between porcupines and pheasants. While were talking of pheasant hunting, F&G had a few observations. First, bird numbers were a little better in isolated areas, as predicted by the Division of Wildlife Resources. Some areas produced birds but only to dedicated hunters with plenty of dogs and a desire to hunt the deep tules and rosebushes. He found the roosters, more than in past years, have learned to run ahead, especially when caught on a dltch bank or fence row. None of that hiding up and hoping youll go past. Maybe thats why our pheasants are still hanging in there. And as usual, he ran into three blind hunters. Nope, didnt see the sign, they said, and didnt know it was hunting by permission as a matter of courtesy. But they sure were in a hurry to leave, for some reason. w "We won a lot of games last year at the end with our condi- . tioning," he added. The coach named Nolan Hess as his most experienced player. The 9 dynamo saw some action last year and was inserted, against pressing teams to handle the ball. Few teams made him cough up the pill. Hess is the field general and brings a good outside shooting along with defensive quickness. There wont be many teams press us effectively with him in the lineup," said Jeppesen. calls him a far shooter and ball handler. He was a jayvee start-te- r last year. 5-- The varsity carries three juniors and a pair of sophomore also. Deverl Stokes is a 3 leaper who can stuff the ball and has a lot of potential. He's starting to find himself. Hes our best jumper but he has a weakness in ball handling," his coach said. 6-- Working Running Mate lineChris Webb, an backer this year, is Hesss running mate at guard. At 1 and 180, Webb is rugged and is one of the teams top defenders. A good rebounder, hes improved his shooting over last year and can move to forward when needed. Mark Williams, says Jeppesen, has the potential of being the top scorer in the region this season. A little slow getting going early in the season, he should catch fire and finish in a blaze. The senior is a 2 forward. Tad Morrison is the other forward. A steady performer, Jeppesen feels hes an adequate shooter and an above average defensive player, "probably our best. Morrision has had good practices this season to date, added the coach. Fighting for the post are two Barry Bradshaw, big men and 4 Todd Grant. Grant didnt play last year and has been hurt by tack of experience, but his intense desire to rebound and play defense has him chasing Bradshaw down the wire. Hard David Petersen and David Brown are also up from the sophomore 6-- if the porcupine give off outsides might, too. 723-M- all-sta- te , . fr .? Experimenting We're doing alot of experimenting early in the season. We want to win these preseason games, but were pointing toward region where they really count. I want our players to have as much experience as they can get before region," stated Jeppesen. Jeppesen looks for the early offense and denied that, will patiently control the ball for the good shot. He runs what he calls motion game that was effective last year. His untried varsity went 14-- 4 as jayvees last, season, but he admits theres a wide gap between jayvee club and varsity. I think well at least win as many as we lose this year. I believe well make the state tournament and I believe well come along in region and give these other teams plenty to worry about," added die coach. Bear River plays through a regular Region One schedule and on the basis of records, either1 leaps into the state tournament ahead of Logan or plays off with Region Sixs, last place team. And this year, Jeppesen believes Logan will be one of the toughest teams in the region. I think you have to go with Roy as the best team right now. They have a physical team and a tot of players coming back. I think Logan has to 1e next, then Box Elder, Sky View, Bear River, Bonneville and Weber, ' he said. Lacking a great deal of experience, the Bees are putting off initial inter-schocombat until Nov, 26 when theyll entertain Ogden from Region Two in tilt. a Coach Stewart says he wants his team aged as much as possible before they start trading baskets with other prep foes. When the schedules flood gates open, however, games will come pouring out at a rate of about two a week for a time. Tipoff time is 6:30 p.m. The Hive boss figures this year's Region One lineup will be balanced tough all along the schedule. But he gives Roy the nod as top choice with Logan and Bonneville also rating special mention. Nov. 30 4ift Theres a tong road ahead for Bear Rivers untested basket-bateam, a road Coach Paul Jeppesen hopes will end in the state basketball tournament and a finish at least as well as his clubs third place last year. On the surface, that might be along shot. Back are no starters, and only one or two players who saw much varsity experience at all last year. Of course, last years team lost four games all season and defeated the Dixie Flyers for third place behind Davis and Springville. But the Brad Cutlers, Jeff Williams, Dale Thompson, David Falks and Mark Weeses ar gone. Yet, Jeppesen is noticably unperturbed about his lack of experience. (6-2- ).
