Show Box Elder places second Good Cooks Season opens for debaters Recipes for the holidays Box Elder High forensics members school began competition a week ago at the annual Portia Douglas Speech festival held at Ogden High by Flo Munson Everyone is excited about new recipes for the holiday season which incidentally is just around the school. corner! Mrs. Gerald (Marianne Manning) Simmons of Tremonton shares recipes for pumpkin pie filling plus a grapefruit cocktail which are from her file marked "choice holiday recipes. Friendliness radiates from Marianne as she welcomes you into her lovely, newly remodeled home at 639 North Third East in Tremonton. She is a hostess and you feel relaxed and comfortablegracious in her home. Marianne was born in Ogden. She has lived in the Tremonton area where she graduated from Bear River High school and LDS seminary. She attended Utah State university in Logan and was later employed as a typist for an insurance company in Salt Lake City. She has also served as librarian at the North Park Elementary school. Her husband was a football coach at Bear River High school for several years. He now coaches swimming and golf. He is the student council advisor. He also operates a farm in the Howell area. which will begin at their home at 7:30 p.m. A typical couple that will be involved are Tony and Esther Davis, parents of a son Anthony. The Davis visited at a couples' night even before they were expecting a child, and Esther has attended meetings and studied methods of natural childbirth through her pregnancy. She also made use of the fine collection of books placed in the local library on baby care subjects. little Anthony Although arrived four weeks early, hes doing fine and the couple credits it much to his natural childbirth and the nutrition of mothers milk. And Anthonys comment? He doesnt say much yet, but he rolls his dark eyes and gurgles and makes satisfied baby noises as well as boasting a lusty crying voice when appropriate. Mrs. Harrison was the founder of the local La Leche League and is a certified leader, with Mrs. Kathie Musser also having been certified as a local leader. The group meets monthly with the general theme better mothering through breastcircles about a feeding .discussion series of lessons on birth, overcoming obstacles and problems, sharing ideas, and nutrition for the entire family. three-week-ol- d Mrs. Gerald Simmons and Suzanne try her pumpkin pie filling ... PUMPKIN PIE FILLING (2 pies) eggs, 1V c. sugar, 2T. flour, tsp. salt, 1 tsp. cinnamon, V6 tsp. nutmeg, tsp. ginger, 1 c. br. sugar (packed), lg. can pumpkin, 1 can condensed c. water. milk, Beat eggs thoroughly; add pumpkin and mix well. Add sugar mixed with flour, salt and spices and br. sugar. Stir until blended. Add milk and water, stirring well. Pour into deep pastry lined pie pans and bake in hot oven 450 degrees for 10 min. Reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake until firm. 3 1 Stake President Gerald Simmons is president of the LDS Tremonton stake. We have many choice experiences entertaining for the general authorities when they visit our stake, Marianne said. With Geralds busy schedule at school plus his responsibilities as stake president I try to keep a casual, relaxed atmosphere for him to come home to. And she does! Mariannes eyes twinkled as she told me, Gerald has a twin brother, Darold Simmons, who is a football coach at Granite High school in Salt Lake City. We oftimes meet someone in the Salt Lake area who mistakes Gerald for Darold. They are so thrilled and delighted to see him that it is sometimes hard for Gerald to identify himself as Darolds twin brother. GRAPEFRUIT COCKTAIL 1 c. sugar, 1 c. water, Cook until it spins a thread. Add 2 T. lemon juice, 1 can grapefruit. Beat with mixer until well blended. Pour into freezer tray and freeze. To serve, spoon into sherbet glasses and pour gingerale over mixture. Two Sons, Daughter The Simmonses have two sons and one daughter. Gary, 19, is fulfilling a Mexico LDS mission. Suzanne, 14, is one of the cheerleaders at Bear River Junior High school and David, 9, attends North Park Elementary school. Mariannes hobbies include sewing for herself and Suzanne, golfing and traveling. As a family the Simmons find skiing exciting. They also enjoy camping. Active in church affairs, Marianne has served as a counselor on the stake primary board. She sings in quartets in ward and community entertainments. She is currently serving as the mother education leader in the Sixth Ward Relief society. She thoroughly enjoys cooking. "Gerald is fond of my homemade bread and pies, she admitted. Suzanne was enthusiastic telling, Mom makes CLAM CHOWDER 3 med. potatoes, diced, ' tall can evaporated milk, 1 can minced clams, undrained. Simmer and let stand for a short period to improve flavor. Top with buttered bread crumbs. Bake uncovered 40 min. at 300 degrees. 1 1 LoLeche League sets Couples night Friday The final results saw five Box Elder people rank high in original oratory and impromptu. Kathy Florez, Janet Phippen, and Michael Krenn placed third, fourth, and fifth two after respectively, preliminary and a final round. Placing second in impromptu, where contestants have one minute to prepare a speech on a randomly drawn topic, was Duana Devilbiss with Doug Osburn taking fifth place. Both gave a talk on the recent, controversial Nixon pardon. In legislative forum, where participants debate bills and resolutions using parlimentary procedure, Robert Northness took second place in the House of Representatives with Kelly Jensen placing eighth in the Senate. Allen Fleming, debate coach, noted that this was the third year in a row in which Box Elder in placed second sweepstakes. He was obviously pleased at the showing his predominantly young team made at the annual event. Next on the agenda for the local squad will be the prestigious Governors Cup tournament, Nov. 16 at the state capitol, where from all over participate.
