Show T ( 2 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah County has new bookmobile Thursday, November 7, 1974 Letters to the Editor... & Utah backward? Editor: I just voted for the second time since coming to this state in January, This is the first and second time since I began voting at the age of 21 some 20 years ago that I have had to use paper ballots and have not had the use of mechanical voting machines. It is the first time that I have ever gone to a private home to do my voting. I am appalled at the way Utah holds its elections. If I did not know the ladies that were working at the poll in my district I would seriously question the legality of the vote being cast and counted. I have lived all over this country and I thought the elections and campaigns in the states of Louisana and Texas were nuts but Utah undoubtedly takes the cake for being the most backward. Why dont we have voting machines? Why dont we vote in a public place such as a church, school or other. I have voted where three and four districts were voting in the same building, each in a different section, of course; there was no confusion, and no problems. What is wrong with the churches and schools in this area? S We have many large LDS as well as churches as well as schools that surely have enough rooms to accomodate more than one district on election day. If we ever have a close election in this state I am going to be one of the first ones to yell foul play the stuffing of a ballot box is very easy; the tampering with a machine takes a great more skill and cunning. Lets get Utah up out of the dark ages and into the light of modem day. If we can build rockets at Thiokol why cant we afford voting machines and public places in which to vote? The inconvenience and headaches to both the person owning the home and the poll watchers (do we have them?) and the district workers would be considerably lessened if not completely wiped out. (Continued From Page One) inconvenient when he has many stops in a relatively brief period of time. However, it is far less costly, assures r much quicker delivery (there is a waiting list for the other type), and, when a chassis wears out, the book section can be lifted onto a new chassis another cost saving. The second difference is the greater carrying capacity of the new unit. It holds 1,500 more than the old one. 3,500 books The scene described is one which has been personally observed on any number of Tuesday mornings when leaving the county commission meeting. The writer went on to point out that, we are not being critical of the deputies themselves since they carry out the policies established by their administrator who, in this case, is too often conspicuously absent from the office. The writer also poses the question regarding, the effective use of our tax money when deputies are allowed to spend hours, looking for something to do in the office.. The article goes on to point out that whoever is elected to the position of sheriff will bear the responsibility of using his men effectively. We for one, when we vote for the next sheriff, will not be voting for a man who feels it his duty to leave the office almost daily and head out west, to catch cattle rustlers. Instead, we hope we are able to cast a ballot for a sheriff who views his main task as that of administrator and coordinator in the office and occasionally in the field checking on his men. most certainly can The views and questions quoted here-inot be ignored and should be considered by all interested citizens. I for one can understand the writers concern and the basis for his questions. In closing I would like to publicly applaud the Democratic and the Republican candidates for the office of sheriff who have maintained an amiable relationship and conducted a clean campaign in spite of an excess of emotion generated by the race for the office. visit to Grouse In that Creek, Penrod said he'll give out an average of 240 books. and Im there for an boy, Im really busy, he said smiling. They stop at all schools (except those in Brigham City) and in communities and other central locations. Penrod gets around to most of his stops every two weeks (except those in the far west). He and Day really turn over the books, particularly mysteries which are said to be the most popular with young and old alike. Last year Penrod circulated 62,000 Cant Beat Bookmobile For peoples tax money you cant beat a bookmobile. For what people pay for and what they get out of it, he stated. A book depot at 127 South Main street in Brigham City contains about 40,000 volumes and is a stopping place each morning for Penrod as he takes off books that arent moving and replaces them with others. two-yea- Two Bookmobiles There are really two bookmobiles serving Box Elder county under dirction of the Utah State Library commission. The books and Day, 72,000 books. other is driven by Bob Day who also goes into a couple of other neighboring counties. Day covers the area from Willard north to Beaver Dam and includes Bear River City. Penrods territory takes in the rest of the county. h lf It is however, more costly to Box Elder county than in prior years, thanks to a drop of federal funding help. Now the service is financed by the county and state with Box Elder picking up a 70 percent share or $30,943 annually, raising the money through a property tax levy. n, (Continued From Page One) Wades, Inc., 841 Edgehill drive, single family dwelling, $20,000. With weary legs but unflagging spirits, the young people joyfully returned with $650, an increase over last year. Last year funds did go for school supplies in South America, developing high protein foods in East Africa, milk in India and less than 8 percent for administrative expenses. Millions of children did benefit. Again your contributions and volunteer helped continue those services. Jay OUT AND IN Driver Don Penrod must It s not as convenient as the old type but BOX . . . a recent issue of a local newspaper raised some questions and observations which I am sure would be of particular interest to citizens in Brigham City and surrounding areas. A question in the opening paragraph is quoted here in its entirety: Why is the average visitor to the county sheriffs office in the courthouse confronted with the scene of three or u four deputies jockeying for position on the only couch in the I office? : in rate $9.00 per year paySubscription able in advance in connection with Sunthe Box Elder News (published days) $4.50 for 6 months: in Box Elder County.
