Wrong, they both shoot the same distance, according to the National Shooting Sports and upland hunters after all birds but pheasants should have fair to excellent hunting in Box Elder county this year, according to John Fricke, Division of Wildlife Resources officer. The foundation, which actually spends money to research such knotty problems that are avidly and sometimes violently argued around potbellies stoves, says the guage of the gun shot makes no difference in the distance a lead pettet the SIZE of the pellet that counts. Fricke, following brood counts by DWR officers in the county on upland game this month. The reason, most probably not due to overhunting, has yet to be pinpointed, he said. Some hunters may blame the season length, he noted, but in Weber county where the vast majority of land is in hunting units that have permitted only nine-dahunts the past several years, the trends are nearly the same. Size nine shot, for instance, will travel is 223 yards. BB shot will go 386 yards, 00 buck, 610 yards and a rifled slug will go 817 yards, according to the foundation. y six chill pellet will second a at feet go as far as a 1,200 traveling six chill pellet from a 410 with the same ballistics. Sort of explodes the old myth that a 10 or shoots a lot farther than the smaller guages. And how do you explain a better killing distance with the larger bores? Any time vegetative types are altered, there is a change in the wildlife use of the land. Utah, in the 127 years since the pioneers arrived, has seen major changes in habitat which, in too many cases, have adversely affected wildlife, said Stapley. Those lands which have had the most dynamic changes affecting game, particularly deer, have taken place along the states foothills the very areas deer depend on during the critical harsh winter periods, he explained. Mountain View, has been Alan, of nailing the big cats in the Bear river, and his latest caught Friday went about seven pounds and 26 inches long. 424 Fishing with Merlin Richardson and Richardsons son, Alan said the big ol channel sucked in a shrimp to meet its demise. Stapley noted that, Besides supporting big game in the winter, they are used for livestock during spring, fall and sometimes winter; housing and summer home developments, which are on the increase; and recreation of every facet which disturbs wildlife trying to exist on the continually diminishing habitat. Blue grouse should be found high in Douglas fir areas, while ruffed grouse are likely to haunt stream beds in willow and aspen stands, he said. Dates and limits on the two birds are to be set later this month. Mourning dove limit is 10 birds with migratory hunting rules in affect, including a plugged gun law. The hunt runs through September. Sage grouse numbers are . ' about the same as last year, said Fricke. A short season on the big bird will probably be set again this year. The birds are found in western reaches of the county. Chukars and Hungarian partridge populations are only fair, said Fricke, and are down about 15 per cent from past years. Swim committee picks three new members The Brigham City Swim Team committee named top male and female swimmers for the past year from the city team and named three men to its numbers following the annual city meet held Monday. Dan Anderton was named top swimmer while Beth Ensign was tabbed the best female swimmer based on number of points accumulated during the past swim year. Named to the committee were Jerry Carr, Ed Bradford and Royce Walker. They replaced Winston Humphrey, chairman, and Jack Sargent, both who have served on the committee several years. Holdover committee members are Betty and Bernie Allen, Norm Anderson and Liz and John Ensign. Ensign said a large turnout of local members, including swimmers from the beginners program, participated in the event. At the end of the meet, a dinner was held at the bowery at Watkins park where business was transacted. Ensign pointed out that the fall schedule for swimming at Box Elder Junior high pool will be announced shortly after school is in session. Only Sure Way The only sure way habitat can be preserved is to buy title of the critical lands so they can renewable resources a quality maintain be set aside for the management of game species. This has been one of the divisions foremost porgrams, noted the assistant chief. Vegetative types on lands that or have been preserved manipulated to benefit big game have also aided other wildlife species and domestic livestock. The division has adapted the multiple use con- - and en- vironment, Stapley pointed out. Often acquired lands have proven to be in strategic locations that would not normally be available to the public. Now, any land purchased under the Division, with sportsmens money, is open to the public for activities such as camping, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, hunting and picture taking as long as they are in harmony with the major objective of supporting wildlife. Thus, concluded Stapley, the division purchased lands have proven their value several times over. attends seminar Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel John A.
