RiZ. 1 ' Horse owners, do you know why so many horses starved to death last year during the winter when the winter did not seem to be a harsh one? Do you know why some horses will starve, feeding in a brush area? Do you know the two most important stages at which to check your horse's health? These questions were just a few of the many questions answered at this month's Humane society meeting by Box Elder County Sheriff Warren W. Hyde. The sheriff explained that during a winter such as last years the snow falls and melts down into a layer of ice and then a new snow fall covers it up. A horse will dig through the new snow but will be unable to reach any nourishment because of the layer of ice underneath. As a result that extra nourishment is removed from their diets.
