HOW LARGE is their debt load, relative to income, and how well are they managing it? As in other parts of the country, there was an upturn in consumer spending in recent months, especially in December, causing the debt load to expand considerably. mu FROM THE standpoint of a good sign. It was a solid indicator of an economy that was on the rise. People were again in the marketplace for new cars, washing machines, furniture, business, this was refrigerators and other costly goods and services. Because most of it was bought on credit, as usual, the increase in the debt load reflects the increase in consumer buying. NATIONALLY, according to figures from the Federal Reserve Board, consumer credit at the beginning of the high, year was at a three-yea- r nearly $179 billion. It was 10 per cent more than a year earlier. Auto buying was the chief reason. In Davis County, based upon average earnings and spending locally and upon the national findings, the amount of installment debt outstanding is estimated at $2,350 per family. IN GENERAL, the debt load is equivalent to about of net disposable income. That is the average. Some families have bigger obligations than that and some have much smaller ones. There is a small proportion that buys for cash and has no installment debt at all. AS FOR the Davis County population as a whole, the amount of such debt outstanding at the beginning of the year was approximately $69,735,000, it is estimated. THE SCIENCE production-opene- fiction with Mike d Brian and Shannon Garlick playing an amazingly interesting introduction on two sets of drums. The production centered around some scientists who had been working on a potion which, when taken internally, could propel one into outer space. THREE young people. Sherry Price, Danny Nielsen and Mitch Stevens who had been cleaning up the science lab after closing time, drank some liquid, which resembled a soft drink, and were immediately propelled onto a strange planet. While trying to get back to earth they encountered many and interesting strange phenomena in the form of dance selections, pantomimes, piano selections, outer space people, accordion number and etc. which were expertly entwined into the plot. They attended the First Annual West Coast Computer Fair and spent time sightseeing in the area.
