Moss, but decided that the creation of a fire district was a county issue and could not be decided on a regional basis. The matter will be considered at the monthly Council of Governments (COG) meeting in three weeks. By ROSELYN KIRK Whether additional fire protection for the south end of Davis County will be provided through the creation of a special fire district is still uncertain. Kays. The Chamber of Commerce meets the third Wednesday of each month. Fran Brown is a reporter of the organization, np Fire service currently county. IN ADDITION, West Bountiful, Centerville and Woods receive fire fighting service from the Cross cities county fire department. Q These cities are charged a fee amounting to one mill. Commissioner Moss and other city officials questioned why the mill levy was less than that paid in unincorporated areas. WHEN contacted later. Commissioner Moss said he had checked with former commissioner Stanley Smoot on the matter. Commissioner Smoot said the difference had been equalized since those cities had paid an equivalent amount on a fire engine to serve the area. Now the truck is paid for, these cities will go back to the original levy, Commissioner Moss said. As a result of the meeting with fire officials, the county is considering a county wide fire district we are aware that two stations are presently needed in the county - one in Centerville and one at 26U0 South in Bountiful. The only county fire station is located at 400 North and 500 West in Boun-- tiful. FIRE protection in the unincorporated areas in the north end of the county is paid for by the county. Firemen and trucks from the nearest city provides fire service and these cities are reimbursed by the county. Although no officials from cities in the north end were present at the meeting, those present questioned whether a fire district for the whole county might not be feasible. Mr. Hess said, if a district were created and the mill levy approved by Davis County citizens, the county would discontinue the present policy of charging fees for fire fighting in cities in the south end. HE POINTED out that the most difficult problem would be to get citizens to approve a mill levy for county-wid- e fire district. Darrell Mclllrath, Bountiful Fire Chief, estimated that at least a four mill levy would be necessary to finance a county wide plan. Any funding for water systems would be additional to that, Ron Layton, former Davis Fire Marshal said. Mr. Hess said that if the district were organized, any city not wishing to participate would not sign the resolution and would provide fire ser-- v ces to their own residents. Earl said the county fire department has "been talking about a similar plan for a long time. He said a fire station should be available every four miles so the fire equipment should not be required to make longer than a two mile run. When COG meets to discuss the fire district issue, Commissioner Moss will arrange for the official who organized Cache Valley fire fighting system to speak. Grant Walker, state fire marshal had suggested that Pete Hansen, reponsible for the organizational fire structure in Cache County, be contacted. IF THE county creates a special service fire district, according to law, the county commission would administer the district. Mr. Hess said an advisory board could be appointed by the commission, rk CHIEF Mclllrath said that Bountiful, which assesses a mill levy and maintains their own fire department, would only want to participate in a district if services were improved. North Salt Lake, which also maintains a fire department, assesses a two mill levy, according to Jerry Lopez, Assistant Fire Chief from North Fertilizer Clean Horse Manure No Weeds Pick-u- p load 300 Salt Lake.
