I only hoped it was true that the Utah High School Association had finally come out of the dark ages and said high schools could run summer basketball leagues. Good ratings went to Wendy DAVIS Highs Chess Club placed second in the Junior Scholastic Chess tournament held on March 30 through April 1 at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. This tournament involved the top chess players from junior and senior high schools in their respective divisions. State College Honors Competition. So as it stands, thanks to a bunch of thoughtless principals and administrators, the summer league high school program is off. dw Viewmont Takes Over Second In Region Baseball Viewmont High took over sole possession of second place in Region Two baseball win over Clearfield with a on the Viking field. Remember the top two teams are invited to the state playoffs later in May. Ogden looks like they already have one invitation sewed up, so the battle for second is up for grabs. JORDAN High, one of the top 3A squads in the state, garnered the first place trophy. The Jordan bunch to- taled 119 points while the Darts were right behind with 107. Dixie placed third in the 11 team meet. Winners for the Davis runners were junior Dave Lewis in the high hurdles and sophomore Mark Davenport in the high jump. Lewis won the event with a very respectable time of 15.5, Jordans John Cutler placed second in the event. DAVENPORT, although only a sophomore, has become one of the premier high jumpers in the State. His leap of easily won the title and this young jumper feels he can go higher. In the 880 the Davis crew placed second and third, junior Dave Hilton placed second while teammate Byron Vincent was right third. Freshman Wayne Pinto placed second in the one mile run. Pinto is a name which will haunt opposing coaches for three more years and already he has a good enough time to place high in the state meet this year. behind him in RAY JONES, a junior, carried the Dart colors in the two mile race and ran off with third place honors. To give some indication of the future for the Darts, five of their top point getters are underclassmen and will return. Davis pulled in some points in the relay events as a com- bination of runners placed second in the mile relay and then came back to place third in the medley. JUNIOR long jumper Dave Lloyd also picked up some points placing second in his event. Again another underclassman who is gaining experience. The Darts should be competitive this year in the state meet, but will be stronger next year. The meet also produced a new 3A state record in the shot put competition.
